The prosecutor cursed and the defense attorney told a joke as both sides laid out opening arguments in the murder trial of George Zimmerman, the man who killed Florida teen Trayvon Martin in what his lawyers say was self-defense and authorities say was a case of fatal profiling.
The all-female jury of six took in both unconventional statements, alternately stunned, taking notes and at times appearing to nod in agreement. Jaws in the jury box dropped when prosecutor John Guy electrified the courtroom with a short, but profanity-laced and impassioned argument that sought to paint the defendant as an angry and out-of-control vigilante who was stalking Martin when he shot the teen in the gated community in Sanford, where he lived.
“F---ing punks,” prosecutor John Guy said in open court, quoting Zimmerman's own words to a non-emergency police dispatcher. “These a--holes, they always get away.”
The language -- rare for open court -- appeared to stun the six female jurors who must decide whether Zimmerman shot and killed the 17-year-old African-American teen in self defense, or if he stalked the youth and provoked the deadly confrontation.
“Those were the words in that grown man’s mouth as he followed, in the dark, a 17-year-old boy who he didn’t know,” continued Guy, as jurors in the Florida courtroom listened intently, some taking notes. “And excuse my language, but those were his words, not mine.”

I think the joke worked. It played right into what the ordeal that the jurors have gone through so far, in terms of selection, processing, red tape, etc.
I don’t think so, I thought the “judge” said no social media stuff could be entered?
Anyone who knows nothing about this is to ignorant to be on a jury. IMHO.

I would be nodding my head just to stay awake during this circus.
Don West is slaughtering the opening statements. He stumbles over his points instead of driving them home. He misspeaks then corrects himself. He pauses and backs up chronologically which confuses the timeline. Good grief.
I’ve heard that Mark O’Mara is an outstanding defense attorney. Why isn’t he delivering the opening statements?

I wound up wishing O’Mara was doing it. O’Mara is a lot shrewder and smoother, from where I sit. Still, West covered a LOT of salient stuff that is utterly devastating to the prosecution.

I think that joke was a subtle reminder to the jury that they have to clear their minds as to what they knew about Mr Zimmerman before they were seated.
I see nothing wrong with that joke.
Although a joke in the midst of a serious trial is out of place. Times have changed. Where’s Perry Mason?
So, did the defencse get a call last night from hussein to intentionally lose the case? Can’t have whitey get out of this... oh, wait, part hispanic and part black, ooops.
Could it vary by County? I’d swear we were told not to take notes.
The way he prefaced it was appropriate and profound, but most people will never hear or read about that.
...which is okay, perhaps, because the jury is who counts, really.
