Egypt's army chief warned on Sunday that the military is ready to intervene to stop the nation from entering a "dark tunnel" of internal conflict.
Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi spoke a week ahead of mass protests planned by opponents of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. There are fears the demonstrations calling for Morsi's ouster will descend into violence after some of the president's hard-line supporters vowed to "smash" them. Others declared protesters were infidels who deserve to be killed.

El-Sissi also appeared to lower the threshold for what warrants intervention by the military. Earlier he cited collapse or near collapse of the state.
He said that while the military has recently stayed out the political fray and focused instead on its combat capabilities, its patriotic and moral responsibility toward Egyptians obliges it to intervene and stop Egypt from "slipping into a dark tunnel of conflict, internal fighting." He said sectarian violence and the collapse of state institutions would also justify intervention.

The liberal secular “Rebel” group has reached the threshold of 15 million signatures to impeach the government of Mohamed Morsi. This was announced yesterday by Mahmoud Badr, co-founder of the initiative, at the conference for the launch of the “Rebels Week”, a week of demonstrations against the government of the Muslim Brotherhood that will end on June 30.

If these Arab states aren’t quite living like they are in the 7th century they soon will be.
Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi actually has some serious credentials, including the The Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC)(UK), and US Army War College.

His career path means that he also likely participated at the staff level in the huge, biannual Bright Star exercises held in Egypt, with the US and 11 other countries. One of the few good things to have come out of the Camp David Accords, these have likely percolated the idea through the Egyptian military that no how, no way, do they want to get into a fight with the US military.
To the point that if some politicians suggests it, he is far more expendable than they are.
But it also means that he is an ice cold realist, and does not want his country to go to hell in a hand basket.
What a coincidence. OUR Commander in Chief is an "El Sissi" too.
