In a surprise defeat for GOP leaders, the House on Thursday rejected a massive farm bill.

What the farm bill defeat means for other big issues:
~~snip~~
This unexpected farm bill defeat portends potentially bad things as the House proceeds to other major issues later this year. Very soon, the House may have to tackle immigration reform -- to say nothing of the effort come fall to try to keep the government open and raise the debt ceiling. Failure to pass the farm bill, by far the simplest of any of these issues, is not good for the House GOP leadership and their ability to wrestle with these big issues.
Moreover, there are serious internal political implications for House Republicans on this. Usually when a measure doesn't have the votes, they pull it from the floor rather than watching it go down to defeat. This is indicative of a questionable whip operation. Secondly, there was a lot of chatter about just wrapping the farm bill up next week if they didn't have the votes. Instead, they forged ahead.
And then, there are the problems for Republicans who voted for the bill, but really didn't want to.
By going ahead with a vote, the GOP leadership team has effectively made its members take a vote, and in some cases vote for a bill that they really weren't comfortable with. There will be some hard questioning of GOP leaders by the rank-and-file about why they moved ahead with this. Secondly, they created an unnecessary vote that Tea Party and conservative candidates can use against sitting Republican members in a primary.

No one here can remember when a sitting speaker actually cast a vote on a bill that was defeated.

You meanie TeaPartiers will make Mr. Speaker cwry!!
These laws need to be about 10 pages in length with none of that “let the secretary decide” k|~@p in it.
Boehner will be consoled by his friends Jack Daniels and Jim Beam.
This needs to happen more often.
Much more often.
Boehner is a leader like I’m an astronaut.
When are they FINALLY going to drive Boehner out of his leadership role?
“Let the secretary decide” is just another way of saying
“tyranny”.
Since the Farm Bill died....the Monsanto Stooges on here disappeared. That Monsanto welfare check ain’t coming in
Sixty-two Republicans willing to publicly embarrass John Boehner. That’s improvement, but we need more if he is to be replaced as Speaker. Still too many have their noses on Boehner’s butt, we need to put pressure on those to stand up to Boehner. If they don’t have the courage to stand up to Boehner they need to be voted out themselves.
When are they FINALLY going to drive Boehner out of his leadership role?
When they find another weeney, leftist, crony capitalist to take his place.
Barely a month later he was back at the trough demanding more money ~ this time for a disabilities education fund of some kind ~ and the Republicans wouldn't play ball with him ~ so he became an independent and caucused with the Democrats.
Reading through the Wiki-ganda pieces I observed that all the farm bill hijacking Jeffords engaged in is NO LONGER MENTIONED ~ folks will need to go elsewhere or that one.
There was another fellow from South Dakota mixed up in this ~ seems that beef cows also provide a substantial percentage of dairy and dairy biproducts in this country, so they have to be satisfied as well.
I hope folks enjoy this thread because literally everybody will need to do some research to find out what happened ~ strange that even the Speaker hadn't been properly advised.
The solution— buy and raise your own cattle if possible.
On the other hand, I don’t own any land, but am willing to forego raising wheat anyway, if the government will pay me millions not to.
Or Boehner Cries Over Spilled Milk.
Cry us a river, we've all cried a river over you...another bottom of the charts tune by the Rino's Supreme, Boner, McCainster, Grahamnasty, and the entire choir of GOPe.
“not good for the House GOP leadership and their ability to wrestle with these big issues”
If it’s not good for the GOP “leadership” then it’s very good for conservatives.
Maybe conservatives in the House have finally come to grips that if they keep marching in lockstep with Boehner/Cantor they are jeopardizing themselves in 2014.
Also, maybe enough of these guys are feeling their oats to start talking about ousting the Weeper in January 2015 (assuming they hang onto the House).
