Senators pledge 'full support' for 'decisive' military action in Syria

Senators from both parties on Tuesday urged President Obama to immediately send weapons to the Syrian opposition and take out President Bashar Assad's air forces.

Syria is at a “critical juncture” and the United States must do what it can to reverse Assad's recent gains on the ground, the chairmen of the Foreign Relations and Armed Forces panels, Sens. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and Carl Levin (D-Mich.), wrote in a letter to Obama along with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

The senators pledged their “full support” if Obama takes “decisive military actions in Syria.”

The lawmakers called on the president to send arms to vetted rebel groups, but said such a move would likely be insufficient because the situation is “deteriorating so dramatically.”

“We must also degrade Assad’s ability to use air power and ballistic missiles against civilian populations and opposition forces in Syria,” they wrote. “Such actions could include the targeting of regime airfields, runways, and aircraft on the ground, which would also limit Assad’s ability to transport and resupply his ground forces and those of his allies by air.

“Finally, as part of this military effort, we encourage you to take steps to support the Syrian political and military opposition in creating and defending safe zones inside Syria where they can better organize and unify their efforts.”

The White House announced Thursday that it has concluded that Assad's forces have used chemical weapons several times, crossing Obama's red line. White House officials said the administration would respond by giving vetted rebel groups “military assistance,” but Obama has not specified what that means and made it clear in an interview Monday that he would not rush into a decision.

“I’m ramping up support for both the political and military opposition. I’ve not specified exactly what we’re doing, and I won’t do so on this show,” he told PBS's Charlie Rose. “I will preserve every option available to me and continually make assessments about what's in the interests of the United States.”

I remember back when the republicans were the party of non interventionism and Dems started all the wars.

These *ssholes won’t be happy until we have boots on the ground in yet another country in which we have no business, and no political, economic, or strategic interests.

Amazing how easy it is for a nervous-nelly gaggle of certifiable Old Farts to send a great many fine, young kids to their deaths.

I don’t think we should be there. Period. We are spread thin enough for one thing. For another the jerks diss our military personnel on a regular basis and give no thought to sending them all again into harm’s way.

It doesn't matter what party the President is. A Republican would be leading the charge as well into Syria.

Lol.

War is when old fools send young men to die.

The United States Congress fits that exactly !

I wish I could understand why, exactly, Arizona GOP primary voters decided to stick with McCain a couple years back...

I have not been able to figure that out.

I guess tenure had much to do with it but that’s no excuse for a senile RINO like McCain, there must be many senile voters.

How many senators have sons, grandsons or great-grandsons in the military. Any? I doubt it. Much bravado from gutless wimps who have never gone themselves.

They'll pledge full support until something goes wrong and then these same chameleons will be clamoring for an investigation into what they originally supported.

The turd is circling the bowl.

Haven’t read this thread yet to see how others believe.

IMO, the US has NO reason to intervene in a civil war in Syria. ....Would we like some foreign country getting involved in our possible future civil war here?

The US needs to get out of Afghanistan and Iraq as soon as possible, forget about Syria and STOP furthering Obama’s dream of a Muslim Caliphate, that he’s been supporting!
