Slaton police arrest woman after request to see warrant

Slaton police came to this woman's house, who wishes to remain anonymous, to arrest her son. But by asking one simple question, she found herself behind bars instead.

"I told him, 'I will release my son to you upon viewing those orders.' Those were exactly my words," The complainant said. "He said, 'This is how you want to play?' He took two steps back, turned around to the officer and said, 'Take her.' They turned me around, handcuffed me, and took me in."

The complainant said she was aware police would be coming to apprehend her 11-year-old son based on a criminal complaint, and that she just wanted to see the warrant. As it turns out, that warrant didn't exist. She spent the night in jail while her son was left at home.

"He told me it was their duty to come pick up my son," She said. "Yet, I had someone stay the night at my house. They never came back that evening, they never came to pick up my son, or do what they told me they were there to do in the beginning."

The police made some significant errors. They should make an apology as soon as possible, and settle as soon as possible to minimize the damage.

Cr*p like this keeps happening and all we talk about is slap on the wrist of the Erring officers.

I sorry people, Yes mistakes do happen. But I don’t think these are mistakes any more. It’s deliberate and designed to make us fear the Police.

Violation of “Policing 101”. There should be one or more statist thinking cop(s) fired from that force in addition to whatever damages the jurisdiction ends up paying.

Wannabe cops. All they do is cost the community funding when the town council has to settle later.

I see a lot of articles like this about Texas. It’s a major reason I don’t see Texas as a viable place to move.

Many police have reached their Peter’s Principal height at writing speeding tickets, and running Radar traps.

They are overwhelmed with their authority, and take any questioning of their authority as disrespect, which means they lose the respect they believe they are entitled to.

Sounds a little bit like they trampled on her 5th Amendment rights...

Every story has 2 sides. Is their a video? What are the chances that a woman that produces an 11 year old that is already an accused criminal, might be fudging the truth for some cash?

We have far too many police and way too many lawyers for a society that claims it is free.

Ain't nobody in this coop but us "free" chickens.

Per facts in story, warrant not issued until after the fact, thus no authority to arrest as no crime was under way or other probable cause. Second, police will not issue an apology unless she agrees not to sue. That means they realize they are in deep doo doo on this one.

McDonald said the Slaton Police Department will issue an apology as long as the mother agrees not to file a lawsuit. He said unless she is compensated for her expenses and the trauma she's been through, a lawsuit won't be out of the question.

This police department screwed itself.

She can consider herself very, very fortunate that they did not shoot her or at least beat the hell out of her.

Now, if this were to have been a Muslim woman....

Seriously, this nation is having some serious problems. I don't see how all of this can end well. The police made a mistake, the responses about this are pure acid. Oh man....

Your point is well taken, but the warrant did not exist on May 29th, the day she was arrested. The warrant was not signed until May 30th. That, unfortunately, trumps everything else.

The only way they could be mistakes would be gross incompetence. This case speaks to the root of the legal justifications the police have to disrupt people’s private lives. The police that show up at your door should know the boundaries they must work within as well as a traffic cop knows the speed limit where he has set up a radar trap.

i.e. I agree with you.

"I don’t think these are mistakes any more. It’s deliberate and designed to make us fear the Police."

No, this is just a simple matter of economics; you get what you pay for.

A city that pays its police officers a decent salary can demand a higher quality of police officer and can place higher standards of qualification on applicants seeking employment as police officers. Of course this requires higher taxes and most cities hesitate to raise taxes sufficiently to cover the cost of a quality police force. As a result of this, a city will wind up with low quality police officers, and in many cases these police officers are nothing but thugs with badges.
