As the North Rests on Its Laurels, South Is Rising Fast: Have America’s fastest-growing economies
The Daily Beast ^ | June 17, 2013 | Joel Kotkin

Posted on 06/17/2013 7:34:00 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

One hundred and fifty years after twin defeats at Gettysburg and Vicksburg destroyed the South’s quest for independence, the region is again on the rise. People and jobs are flowing there, and Northerners are perplexed by the resurgence of America’s home of the ignorant, the obese, the prejudiced and exploited, the religious and the undereducated. Responding to new census data showing the Lone Star State is now home to eight of America’s 15 fastest-growing cities, Gawker asked: “What is it that makes Texas so attractive? Is it the prisons? The racism? The deadly weather? The deadly animals? The deadly crime? The deadly political leadership? The costumed sex fetish conventions? The cannibal necromancers?”

The North and South have come to resemble a couple who, although married, dream very different dreams. The South, along with the Plains, is focused on growing its economy, getting rich, and catching up with the North’s cultural and financial hegemons. The Yankee nation, by contrast, is largely concerned with preserving its privileged economic and cultural position—with its elites pulling up the ladder behind themselves.

This schism between the old Confederacy and the Northeastern elites is far more relevant and historically grounded than the glib idea of “red” and “blue” Americas. The base of today’s Republican Party—once the party of the North—now lies in the former secessionist states, along with adjacent and culturally allied areas, such as Appalachia, the southern Great Plains, and parts of the Southwest, notably Arizona, largely settled by former Southerners.

“In almost every species of conceivable statistics having to do with wealth,” John Gunther wrote in 1946, “the South is at the bottom.”(continued)

" They get involved in such things because its the liberal mind set: "

A idle mind is the workshop of the devil.

They got to much time on their hands and are involved in other people's business and lives to screw up.

Yet SC produces more than twice the peaches that GA does.

And they’re both behind CA.

The South (will not) throw off social conservatism (and emulate) the North in this way (at least until Christ returns to take His true saints).. He’s wrong. Jesus has a big tradition in the south (especially among southern..see black Democrats who AGREE with Republicans socially, largely), it’s only the elites who move and vote Dem that are socially liberal and many move back “because they don’t like it”, eventually. WE’ll never go SOC-LIB!

I have a not-so-funny funny story about clean air. Every time I travel with friends to somewhere with better air than NYC, I still need to use my asthma pump because my lungs aren’t used to cleaner air. Sometimes I cough often until it becomes more comfortable in my lungs.

I came back late Sunday afternoon after a roadtrip to Indiana and Chicago with my friends in a band, and when I woke up Monday morning (after getting real sleep instead of sleeping in a van), after having breathed midwest air for a few days, I spat out phlegm that had a little blood in it. Pretty said considering I have a carbon filter for a small air cleaner.

Asthma is just so wonderful.

The north isn’t “resting on its laurels” - - the north is dominated by scumbag Democrats who are chasing businesses out of town by over-taxing them for the money they need to continue buying the votes of the moocher base of their party.

Austin? Houston? And several other TX cities, are already well-polluted with lib-dems, and the local gov’ts run by them. The ‘blue areas’ of TX are getting larger every 4yrs, as evidenced by the county-by-county GE maps. Compare 2000 to 2004 to 2008 to 2012; it’s becoming very obvious. And look at the influx of ‘blue counties’ at the bottom of the map, next to Mexico.

The problem is that as they evacuate places in the Northeast and moving south, they bring the very voting patters that caused the problems the northeast is experiencing. They cannot seem to connect the dots between voting A) for dems and B) nasty results.

Which is exactly why things are changing here in the midwest. Michigan is kind of like a former eastern bloc nation after the fall of the soviet union. The soviets moved on to greener pastures and those who remain are rebuilding from a far more conservative foundation with the strongest desire for freedom.

I personally think Michigan tea partiers are a good model of how to get things done. We passed RTW in the last place it was ever expected to happen. We've put a tea partier on the RNC. Tea Partiers are taking over from the ground up by winning seats at the county level all across the state.

YES...don't worry, several tens of millions of illegal immigrants flooding those states and voting next election will fix this.

All too true, especially along the I 35 corridor from DFW to San Antonio. The Rio Grande valley has traditionally been blue. Once amnesty kicks in we'll be TexMexiFornia and just as blue, but the GOPe will have their slave wage housekeepers and yard men....just not their votes.

Yep, when Yankees move here, I call them Yankees to their face and tell them they are basically considered outsiders until they are proven worthy.

what is it that makes Texas so attractive? The same thing that used to make the US so attractive, freedom. Or at least the hope of finding freedom there. The reality is freedom is being lost daily even in my home state of Texas, but we are scratching and kicking to keep it as best we can.
