WASHINGTON (AP) Efforts to curb global warming have quietly shifted as greenhouse gases inexorably rise.
The conversation is no longer solely about how to save the planet by cutting carbon emissions. It's becoming more about how to save ourselves from the warming planet's wild weather.
It was Mayor Michael Bloomberg's announcement last week of an ambitious plan to stave off New York City's rising seas with flood gates, levees and more that brought this transition into full focus.
After years of losing the fight against rising global emissions of heat-trapping gases, governments around the world are emphasizing what a U.N. Foundation scientific report calls "managing the unavoidable."
It's called adaptation and it's about as sexy but as necessary as insurance, experts say.
It's also a message that once was taboo among climate activists such as former Vice President Al Gore.
In his 1992 book "Earth in the Balance," Gore compared talk of adapting to climate change to laziness that would distract from necessary efforts.

Borenstein alert.
Can we vote on whether NY is worth saving before any tax money is spent?
“Whether you believe climate change is real or not is beside the point,” said Bloomberg. “All we want to do is regulate, tax and spend anyway.”/s
How can one save themselves form a dictatorship?
lol.. I hear ya. I bet Seth was bummed out once the scam was revealed, but He’s a trooper.. and keeps shoveling on que. ;-]
Current percentage of CO2 in the earths atmosphere...0.04% or Zero point zero.
Current percentage of methane in the earths atmosphere...0.00017% or zero point zero zero zero.
Run for your lives, we're doomed.
Bloomberg wants to spend $20 billion on flood walls and levys and all that. maybe he could tax big gulps to pay for it. Since his plan to ban big gulps was overturned in court, the next liberal step should be a big tax on big gulps
From the article: “On Monday, more than three dozen other municipal officials from across the country will go public with a nationwide effort to make their cities more resilient to natural disasters and the effects of man-made global warming.”
As with any political gambit, keep an eye on the money.
My bet is that this is just a different route to a carbon tax and that the money will soon flow from the taxpayers to the favored few, with politicians taking their usual cut, either in campaign contributions or outright graft. After all, how can you argue against preparedness?
Norsman, it’s much more than that- this is a MASSSIVE land grab of ocean front property by bllomsie- he is goign to pass a law forbidding current ocean front owners from ownign hteir properties- at first he will begin a govenrment ‘buy out- but when noone wants to give up their land for rediculously low prices- he will pass a law forbiddign htem from ownign it- and iwll pass it under the guise of ‘imminent threat to the environmwent i nthel ight of ‘new data’ that hsows beachfront [properties ‘put ocmunities at risk unnecessarilyu”
H’es been tryign to turn beach front properties into ‘national parks’ for a long time now so that he can charge admittance- which is just anotehr money brabbign scheme by NY- and when sandy hit he immediately stepped in tryign to convicne everyoen that it was so dangerous to live there that they shoudl sell their properties to him/the state- of ocurse there’s been how many such storms i nthe past 1000 years trhere? Maybe a mere dozen?
This dude is a tyrant- make no mistake-
>>make no mistake<<
Whew! Take your own advice, or else start using a spell checker...or kick your cat off of your keyboard when you’re posting...
Anyway, this is way bigger than just New York City. Liberals haven’t given up on a carbon tax; this is just another play to build support for one, in my opinion, although you could be right about Bloomberg’s intentions for waterfront property.
Key players, Gore, are giving up: they cant control the climate
[[Whew! Take your own advice, or else start using a spell checker...or kick your cat off of your keyboard when youre posting...]]
If I did that then you’d have nothign to complain about- and hwat fun woudl thaT be?
[[Anyway, this is way bigger than just New York City. Liberals havent given up on a carbon tax;]]
I realize that- but bloomingberg and kkkuomo have been itchign for al o0ng time now to make shoreline properties state land whcih they can then charge a fee to visit- they’ve run out of thign to tax NY’ers for, so now they’ve got to come up with new sneaky ways of extortign monety from them- I guess they feel they can collect more revenue by chargign peopel to visit the shorelines than they cna in collecting taxes from peopel who own homes there-
What they can’t steal from carbon taxes, they will fidn another way to steal through other equally disghonest practices-
Rick perry was just in NY courtign busiensses to move to Texas, hopefully many will- kkkuomo is offering busiensses tx exempt status for 10 years if they move to NY, but my guess is that after that 10 years, there will be soem kidn of retroactive taxes or perhaps higher taxes at that point- and if the businesses then try to move out of NY they will be fined-
[[although you could be right about Bloombergs intentions for waterfront property.]]
I dunno if I’m right or not- but after watchign him try to pursuade homeowners to sell their land to him after hurricane Irene (or sandy, can’t remember which one)- I thjought back then that that stinker is tryign to take over prime beachfront realestate, and now readign this article, I think I was right back then- it just reinforces what I beleived then- NY liberals have been tryign for many years to make the whoel dang state a ‘National park’ and after readign about the UN 800 page book on how to ‘legally’ confiscate land, which many in the states are tryign to adopt- I thouight peopell ike him and kkkuomo were just the types that woudl force peopel fro mtheir lands ‘in the name of environmental concerns’- and now with htis recent switch i ntactics concernign ‘global warming/adopting’- I’m seeign it a little more clearly- it’s right out of the UN palybook it seems-
I”m sorry, but if your spelling skills are that bad, use a spell checker.
If you’re doing it purposefully, you’re just being rude.
Regardless, I stopped reading your last reply at the end of the first sentence.
Have a nice day.
youre just being rude.
[[Regardless, I stopped reading your last reply at the end of the first sentence.]]
Gee- I hope I can sleep tonight after learnign that?
[[Im sorry, but if your spelling skills are that bad, use a spell checker.]]
