The bicyclist doesnt remember seeing the youths run at him as he pedaled home late Tuesday afternoon on the Metropolitan Branch Trail, but he certainly recalls one knocking him off his bike and at least a dozen others piling on, punching and kicking him in the head.
What the 37-year-old cant understand is why they did it. They didnt take his $500 bicycle. They ignored his cellphone. They didnt want the $20 in his wallet. In fact, the victim said, I didnt hear a word.
And the lack of apparent motive is haunting the married father of two, who uses the trail regularly to bike between his office in the NoMa section of the District and his house in Silver Spring.
The randomness of the attack near Third and S streets NE and near the location of a surge of violent robberies two years ago has made him more scared and more angry and left him wondering whether its time to give up pedal power in his commute.
I would be fine if they took my things, that I understand, said the man, recovering at home from broken bones above his left eye and bruises too numerous to count. But violence for violences sake is troubling.

Shoulda had Uncle Joe’s shotgun with him.
Black Ku Klux Klan racism strikes again
No more political correctness.....call it what it is. Time to stop it too
That DC dude definitely needed Kitty Pride....punches would have went right thru him....lol. (yes did get your point...great example)
What’s troubling is that this dilusional white guy has been too brainwashed by PC rhetoric to admit that he was attacked by a pack of “youths” because he’s white. Dilusional whites will do anything to avoid stating the obvious about black violence and racism.
And throwing rocks at a moving train for fun? DC has had to alter bus routes because the “youths” would not refrain from throwing rocks at the bus. Yet we’re all supposed to pretend that there is no problem with “youths”. Meanwhile our taxes have to cover the damaged trains and buses and pay for extra security. Some “diverse” areas practically have to become a police state.
Meanwhile, now that the Trayvon Martin jury selection is happening, numerous talking heads will be telling us how evil and racist it is to presume that a teenage black male is up to no good.
The black community always wants to blame outsiders for noticing their pathologies while doing everything to deny those obvious pathologies exist. They have no accountability and can’t admit that the “racism” people show of being weary around questionable looking young black men is completely supported by criminal statistics.
“And the lack of apparent motive is haunting the married father of two...”
The liberal pets are biting the hand that feeds them, and this idiot can’t figure out why. Proving again that liberals have an IQ of 70 or less.
Amazing how the press only gets detailed descriptions of perps who aren't Eric Holder's people.
If you take a close look at the map in the story, you will see that the area of the attack is just beside the northbound railroad tracks adjacent to the rail yards and north of New York Avenue. As in many cities, the railroad corridor is rough. To compound the problem, New York Avenue, once a graceful street, was turned into a commuter sewer in the 1960's, making it all-but-uninhabitable for folks with two nickels to rub together, and thus a magnet for the undesirables. On top of that, Eckington is home to a big industrial/warehouse area full of big sterile boxes with large stretches deserted at night. A tough combination all around. This will not make much sense to the out-of-towners, but y'all have heard of Anacostia, and this area for many years was every bit as bad. But it is improving rapidly; for that matter, so is much of Anacostia.
There is very strong redevelopment pushing north from Union Station, with Metro stops becoming the hub for some pretty nice improvements in many areas. Eckington is too close to Capitol Hill and downtown not to redevelop. H Street, long a battleground, is turning into a destination, and good things are moving north. I've lived on Capitol Hill for over 30 years and long regarded H Street as a boundary. I now know several people in Trinidad and even a couple in Ivy City, which would have been unthinkable even five years ago.
Since there is no name, perhaps there was no such incident.
The question of the day is....... why was he riding on their turf?
But violence for violences sake is troubling.”
There was a reason. You were Riding While White.
My wife used to work ate 3rd. and R street when the National Geographic owned a building there.
Of course that was 50 years ago. Before the 68 riots.
When a citizen could walk most streets without fear. Even in Washington DC. After the riots race relations went downhill fast.
That bike path runs along the tracks, past what was once known as Eckington Yards.
This man became a victim of a race war that he is too stupid to realize is being fought.
Did he tell them he voted for Obama and was for Affirmative Action? How could this happen?
Pray for America to Wake Up
At least down here in Mississippi (and many other States), a person can legally carry some protection - I carry when I walk/jog the neighborhood, and the acres of undeveloped land, because there are a few dogs that are “worrisome” when left unattended as they usually are. I have let the owners know that I will not be menaced off the streets and other areas because they won’t properly control their animals, but I fear that some day I will have to “go Police” on a dog to prevent serious damage to myself.
It's the most obvious thing in the world. It's amazing the mental gymnastics people go through and the lies people tell themselves to deny the truth.
Fwiw, this guy is not a gentrifier. He is a bike commuter. He was headed home to Silver Spring, which is just north of the D.C. line. The story doesn’t say exactly where he lives and works, but my guess is that he has about a 6-8 mile commute, most of it on a good trail. In decent weather, that’s pretty sweet. Plus he can probably ride it just about as fast, and maybe faster, than he could drive it in rush hour.
That said, the area of the attack IS gentrifying. It is in the urban adventure phase now. Those who stick it out will be real estate millionnaires down the road.
What happened to that house? You must have sold it and possibly taken a bath? . . .I bought a house in the ghetto and I had to walk because I couldn't sell if for what it's worth (location, location, location)
Sorry that your bet didn’t work out. Where did you buy?
I’m still in the same house. Gentrification has been very, very good to us. Capitol Hill used to be an affordable neighborhood with lots of first time homebuyers. It has now become a destination neighborhood.
Location, location, location. There is no guarantee that any particular neighborhood will turn around, but the price of living in the D.C. suburbs is being married to your car in the midst of some of the country’s worst congestion. That is the biggest factor driving gentrification. If the school situation could be fixed, the inflow would become a flood.
