(Newser) It's bad enough that Carie Charlesworth is dealing with an abusive ex-husbandbut now she's also out of a job due to the situation. After a "very bad weekend" involving her ex in January, Charlesworth warned the principal at San Diego's Holy Trinity School to watch out for him. He did indeed show up in the school parking lot, forcing a lockdown. Charlesworth was immediately put on "indefinite leave," as were her four kids, who attended the school. Despite the fact that her ex is now in jail, three months later she was fired after 14 years with the Diocese of San Diego, NBC San Diego reports.
The termination letter from the diocese notes that, though school officials "feel deeply" for Charlesworth and are praying for her, her ex has a 22-year history of documented violence and has not been deterred by restraining orders. Out of fear that he may cause problems upon his release from prison (which they note could happen as soon as "next fall"), "we simply cannot allow you to return to work [at Holy Trinity] or, unfortunately, at any other school in the diocese," the letter states, adding that Charlesworth will continue to be paid through Aug. 9. Charlesworth, who plans to file a lawsuit, says, "That's why women of domestic violence don't come forward, because they're afraid of the way people are going to see them, view them, perceive them, treat them."
No, you’re wrong. Its their job to protect the CHILDREN.
If employees (and idiot exes) pose a threat to the kiddoes - then they gotta go.
Wow so many facts missing. Angry people show up at schools all the time. Parents show up angry with staff, with each other. Does that require an automatic lockdown? Does this ex have a history of hurting children, neighbors, anyone other than this woman he is harassing? How do we know he isn’t targeting just her? Seems to me if she has a restraining order, it’s up to the school/her to call LEO if the guy shows up. There are children who go to school where one parent has a restraining order against the other,,,so those children should be pushed out of school? Why?
I think we don’t have all the facts here.
The husband is getting out of jail in June.
“Gunpowder & Lead”
County road 233, under my feet
Nothin’ on this white rock but little ole me
I’ve got two miles ‘til, he makes bail
And if I’m right we’re headed straight for hell
I’m goin’ home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door and light a cigarette
If he wants a fight well now he’s got one
And he ain’t seen me crazy yet
He slapped my face and he shook me like a rag doll
Don’t that sound like a real man
I’m going to show him what a little girls are made of
Gunpowder and lead
It’s half past ten, another six pack in
And I can feel the rumble like a cold black wind
He pulls in the drive, the gravel flies
He don’t know what’s waiting here this time
I’m goin’ home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door and light a cigarette
If he wants a fight well now he’s got one
And he ain’t seen me crazy yet
He slapped my face and he shook me like a rag doll
Don’t that sound like a real man
I’m going to show him what a little girls are made of
Gunpowder and lead
His fist is big but my gun’s bigger
He’ll find out when I pull the trigger
I’m goin’ home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door and light a cigarette
If he wants a fight well now he’s got one
And he ain’t seen me crazy yet
He slapped my face and he shook me like a rag doll
Don’t that sound like a real man
I’m going to show him what a little girls are made of
Gunpowder and, gunpowder and lead
The school is completely in the wrong.
I agree. They coulda taken that chance that the creep wouldn’t show up again and have a shoot out on school property taking out innocent children.

We need the A-Team to come take care of this. Husband...what husband?
Wow. Great find. Thanks for posting that. It only reinforces what our instincts were telling us.
The school was justified in letting her go.
Agree....and the guy had previously threatened the school children....so I agree with their decision.
>> The school is completely in the wrong.
Like Hell it is. The school doesn’t owe her a damn thing except for remuneration of work performed.
I also agree with Autumnraine. Instead of firing her for something that was not her fault, the school officials should find a way to deal with the perpetrator.
So I guess you agree with the mentality of carefully avoiding offense to Muslims because they might kill people, while being fine with offending decent people because you know they won’t attack you. Keep bending over backwards to accommodate evil. Let me know how that works out for you.
So obviously she'll be giving back all the money that she's being paid through August 9th 2013 for not working as would you, right?
This guy has had serious violence problems for 20 years, and the court system has obviously been completely unable to "deal with" him.
Please explain what the school should do to "deal with" this extremely violent man, when the courts obviously can't.
And also, incidentally, why they would not be liable to the parents of a bunch of injured or dead children when he showed up at the school with a grudge and a bomb while they were still trying to "deal with" him.
By now I trust you both have seen the letter in post 26.
If you still think the school is wrong, then you probably believe the facts they presented in that letter are lies.
I can’t believe you think it was the school’s responsibility to “deal with the perpetrator”. Do you think employers should handle and deal with all their employees personal problems that they bring onto the job?
Actually - in the end they did “deal with the perpetrator”. The removed the source that brought that perp to their campus in the first place.
Good call for the Administrators.
Exactly. This woman had FOUR children with an abuser? She has some personal accountability at that point. This abusive behaviour does not just appear suddenly.
I once worked in the emergency room on night shift and saw women come in with broken faces and they went back home with the guys, repeatedly. I saw x-rays of a women who already had metal sutures in her face smile and go back home with the guy.
And this is a reason why. She is now unemployed in this economy, good luck finding a new job. Abuse is about control, and this district just buckled to an abuser.
Yeah, he may show up with a gun, but so may some angry parent who decides to shoot their ex over a custody issue, or some random weirdo who wants to shoot up a kindergarten.
And this school has just admitted that if someone shows up with a gun, these kids are dead meat, and the school is unable to do anything to keep them safe.
That makes this not a random weirdo attack, but a credible threat from a known source to the school.
Once you have notice, the school has a duty to defend its students from danger. It would be just the same if the school had notice of a defective roof or a gas leak.
RE: Abusive Spouse.
The letter in post 26 clearly points out that this man was an abusive wife-beating POS even before he met the current wife. She knew. She knew what he was before she married him and had 4 kids with him.
And now? Now he’s raising that level of violence to a higher level involving innocent children at school.
And some FReepers are OK with this.
