The trial of George Zimmerman, the Florida neighborhood watch captain accused of murdering teen Trayvon Martin while on patrol, begins Monday with jury selection.
The February 12, 2012, incident in central Florida sparked a fierce national debate about such issues as gun control, equal justice and race after Zimmerman, who is Hispanic, fatally shot Martin, a black teenager.
There is no disputing that Zimmerman fired his 9-mm. handgun after calling police, exiting his pickup truck to follow Martin, then getting into a fight with the 17-year-old on a rainy night inside the gated Retreat at Twin Lakes community.
The 29-year-old Zimmerman, who had a concealed weapon permit, has admitted to shooting Martin in the chest.
But Zimmerman says the teen circled back and attacked him as he walked back to his truck punching him in the face and slamming the back of his head into the sidewalk.

"Under Florida law, a person can lawfully shoot somebody in self-defense to prevent their own death or great bodily harm."
With a guy on top of you, beating your head against the pavement, who would not fear for their life?
If you think he will get a FAIR trial, I got some property in West Texas from where you can see the Brooklyn Bridge, you need to buy from me. $1 an acre.
Debunking the stand your ground myth
Whatever happened on the night that George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin, we know one thing for sure: The gun prohibition lobbies and their compliant media friends have been deceiving the public about Floridas laws. Among the many deceits is the claim that Floridas stand your ground law affects the legality of whatever Mr. Zimmerman did.
The assertion that Florida law allows shooting whenever someone believes it to be necessary is a flat-out lie. The actual law of Florida is that a person is justified in the use of deadly force if (1) He or she reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony (Florida Statutes, Section 776.012).
The second part of the law provides special provisions for self-defense against violent home invaders or carjackers. Neither of those is relevant to the Zimmerman case.

Did they finally manage to find enough kangaroos for this court?
Who wrote this crap?
That we even need a law that states that is about the most insane thing I ever heard. It’s like saying “You have the right not to get killed” Oh really? Well thank you for informing me of that. I was all set to get killed next time I get mugged.
On the other hand I guess it is a necessary law being that liberals are telling Zimmerman he did *not* have the right to defend his life. He should have accepted his death “like a man”. This world just gets more and more insane doesn’t it.
The trial is a sham. George Zimmerman clearly acted in self-defense and Travon Martin simply picked on the wrong guy to assault that fateful night. The local police had no intention of arresting Zimmerman but once the leftmedia glommed onto the story and played up the race angle, the Florida state prosecutor felt compelled to charge Zimmerman. As the trial begins, the race hustlers will be out in force, sending a pointed message that the ‘right’ verdict must be delivered or riots will ensue. We can only hope and pray that the jury will show some integrity (and guts) by acquitting Zimmerman but I’m not optimistic - and that is what saddens me about this case.
MSNBC has stated that they want to “own” this trial...in an attempt to get their rating back out of the toilet..Al Sharpton will be presenting a balanced overview of each day’s proceedings on his 6PM show..and he has hired Tawana Brawley as his inside the courtroom reporter..
A very fast acquittal will restore this travesty to it's proper place in case law. Anything other than that will be seen as lawless lynching by racist blacks.
I heard Tawana can’t be there Tuesday. Crystal Magnum will fill in for her that day.
Just the fact that this trial is underway is insane - and blatantly racist.
I think I will tape Sharpton’s show...you have to figure that he will go completely off the rails on this..
They can have it. I'll catch the highlights every few days elsewhere, but will be busy watching the fall of Obama unfold as the PRISM scandal starts to go ballistic.
“Under Florida law, a person can lawfully shoot somebody in self-defense to prevent their own death or great bodily harm.”
Case dismissed!
Yeah - whoever wrote is a big part of the problem we face in this nation.
So if a person is beating up a police officer they’re not allowed to shot in self defense?
So if a person is beating up a police officer they’re not allowed to shot in self defense?
Stop right there. Are you saying that Zimmerman is not protected by that law?
Of all the sad stories that have happened to this great country, this must be the saddest of all. Bernie Goetz - despite the bad press - never spent a day in jail. That was the 1980s when the country still had some common sense. Poor, poor man.
