Edward Snowden: the whistleblower behind revelations of NSA surveillance
GUARDIAN ^ | Sunday 9 June 2013 14.27 EDT | Glenn Greenwald, Ewen MacAskill and Laura Poitras in Hong Kong

Posted on 06/09/2013 11:41:17 AM PDT by sunmars

The individual responsible for one of the most significant leaks in US political history is Edward Snowden, a 29-year-old former technical assistant for the CIA and current employee of the defence contractor Booz Allen Hamilton. Snowden has been working at the National Security Agency for the last four years as an employee of various outside contractors, including Booz Allen and Dell.

The Guardian, after several days of interviews, is revealing his identity at his request. From the moment he decided to disclose numerous top-secret documents to the public, he was determined not to opt for the protection of anonymity. "I have no intention of hiding who I am because I know I have done nothing wrong," he said.

Snowden will go down in history as one of America's most consequential whistleblowers, alongside Daniel Ellsberg and Bradley Manning. He is responsible for handing over material from one of the world's most secretive organisations – the NSA.

In a note accompanying the first set of documents he provided, he wrote: "I understand that I will be made to suffer for my actions," but "I will be satisfied if the federation of secret law, unequal pardon and irresistible executive powers that rule the world that I love are revealed even for an instant."

I am talking about the entire liberal established of media, education and special interest groups that would tolerate this.

And there is no conservative in the White House or any policy making body - you’re blaming the wrong folks and your dog won’t hunt.

What did Snowden mean when he said that they could get the “Triads” to take care of him?

My thinking is that this kid has aLOT more up his sleeve....meaning alot more detrimental information. I don’t think he would’ve exposed himself otherwise. This story will get much more “interesting”.

Many people are high school drop outs and still go on the college or grad school.

Staying out of the normal way allows people to maintain their integrity.

Triad refers to the many branches of Chinese transnational organized crime organizations based in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and also in countries with significant Chinese populations, such as the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Siam (now Thailand), the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

The term “Triad” was assumed to be coined by British authorities in colonial Hong Kong, as a reference to the triads’ use of triangular imagery. While never proven, it is “highly probable” that triad organizations either took after or were originally part of the revolutionary movement called the White Lotus Society.

"You cite the constitution with no reference to the fact that reasonable searches are allowed under the 4th amendment. Constuctivists don’t usually edit or strike passages of the text.

To date, we have little distinction between a DB of phone company metadata and a phone book. You wouldn’t prevent the cops from using a phone book, or would you?" Well the phone book doesn't cross reference all the numbers that are connected with any other number, or the time of call, or the duration of call, does it? Or who knows what all else?

These programs were all founded by GWB. He of the "no child left behind" act.

Just because GWB had an (R) behind his name on the ballot didn't mean he was a friend of constitutionally limited government. He was, sadly, a progressive "compassionate conservative". His activism gave us BHO, a far worse Chicago thug politician. But just the logical extreme of GWB's politics.

I’ve never been big on revealing secret information. So I can’t praise this man for what he’s done.

In the interview he indicates he has a “partner”, and lived in Hawaii where he worked. Partway through they asked if his family knew he was doing this. Partner, assume homosexual, as usually one doesn’t call a girlfriend/fiance a partner in current usage.

“Was the NSA data used by this administration for partisan political purposes?”

I think that every aspect of the Federal Government was used to get Obama re elected. IRS data on Romney was leaked, for instance.

I think the Census data was used for fundraising, and this time it was run out of the White House. Couple that with the group and affinity tracking NSA database and who knows how many other Federal databases, and you can win every election.

I’ve suspected that lots of the data analyses was run on Google server farms, but I can’t nail that down, so that’s just speculation at this point.

One part of the video interview he says that “China is not an enemy” ... one wonders who is running him, for real. Not the russians, and not Assange.

Better than a child genius (they tend to burn out quickly), Ed is a self-taught computer geek. No college degree...I'm not sure he even finished his GED. Self-taught and learned the tricks of the trade.
But he has worked inside the beast and knows the trip-wires first hand.
He is inspiring real fear among those who previously felt fearless.

IMO, as long as he has publicity he is...somewhat safe. If/When this dies out, well, you are dealing with people who take revenge very very seriously...and are very very creative.

SO far, IMO, he is a good guy....(in the Lib who got mugged kind of way)

Booz Allen is owned by The Carlyle Partners V which is odd to me. They were purchsed by Carlyle partners in 2008.

Ah, someone's thinking.

Why does this seem odd...

“Was the NSA data used by this administration for partisan political purposes?”

If the IRS was harrassing Tea Partiers, Christian and pro-Israel groups, plus Republican donors, what is the liklihood that PRISM was reading the e-mails of the RNC and the Romney campaign?

Given the ethical quality of this administration, I don't doubt that all of these surveillance tools were being used for political purposes.
