Back in April, we notified the public that the insanely rich town of Atherton was attempting to bill President Obama for his visit to the small Peninsula town, where the median home price is $4,010,200.
Presumably, the White House told Atherton where they could shove their bill, because now the town is reportedly hitting up the two homeowners who hosted the President's April fundraiser that cost the town some $8,000 in security and cleanup. The city is going as far as threatening to slap a lien on the two properties unless the owners pay up.
"If the town incurs a cost that rightly should belong to somebody else, we're going to pursue that," Atherton Town Manager George Rodericks told KPIX 5.
On April 4, President Obama attended a morning brunch hosted by Liz Simons and Mark Heising, then a luncheon at the home of Marcia and John Goldman. Those stops were to benefit the Democratic National Committee -- and that they did. The fundraisers raked in more than $3 million for Democrats.
The town, which is home to Google guru Erick Schmidt, was pissy over the amount of cash spent to accommodate the event and was ballsy enough to send invoices to the White House, the Democratic National Committee, the Secret Service and both homeowners.
So far, the town has not received a cent, according to CBS.
"If we were to hold, say, a wedding here, and have to close off streets, we would expect the people that were hosting the wedding to pay it and I think the taxpayers would also ask for that," Councilman Bill Widmer lamented to the press.
If the homeowners don't reimburse the town the $8K, then Atherton city leaders could (and probably would) process a lien against their property and collect the cash via property tax, Rodericks, said.
Rodericks noted that Atherton is not Obama's personal ATM.
No, that'd be San Francisco, where police racked up more than $60,000 in overtime in April for the president's visit. Oakland reportedly ended up with a $300,000 bill last year when Obama made his one-time stop to the O-Town.
Meanwhile, the city of Palo Alto, which is also insanely wealthy, is awaiting Obama's presence today for private fundraiser, but says it has no plans to hit up the White House for reimbursement.
For what it's worth, Atherton's Mayor Elizabeth Lewis is a registered Republican.
Is Atherton insanely wealthy? I didn’t think of it that way.
The homeowners gotta pay the freight - its only right ...
good
Please explain to me why you think that’s good. I must be missing something here.....
Atherton is one of the wealthiest towns in America....
as for it being “insanely wealthy” .. well, O keeps going there because some Atherton residents keep shoving zillions of dineros in political contributions at him...
if that ain’t insane, what is?
Sounds good to me. The first I read it I thought they were trying to bill the whole town. But the second time thru it was only the two home owners that were visited by the president.
um.. easy solution.. don’t spend any local money to accommodate a presidential visit.
Let the Secret Service do it’s job.
For what it’s worth, if I insisted on some vast police deployment, I’d be getting a bill from my city for it. Should the White House be billed? What, that makes as much sense as randomly walking up to someone in the town and making them pay. The White House is funded by the American people, though taxes.
The rightful party to pony up the funds are the hosts of the event, just as any host would be expected to pony up the funds for any other type of event that requires police presence.
Why haven’t the home owners already paid off this bill? Do they think that the rest of the citizens of the town should pay it?
Oh, for Pete’s sake, what am I thinking? They’re liberals, of course they think that everyone else should pay for their party. It’s how the entire Democrat party operates - throw lavish gatherings, and expect everyone else to pick up the bill. After all, they DID bring the Dear Leader to the town...
Ah...this is indeed Rich....LOL
Good
The way I read it was the two home owners that hosted the fund raiser were the only ones billed.
Of course, one of the greatest football players ever lived there. Among other football players.
Sheesh, you’ll find that amount in lost change hiding in the seats of any Maybach, Veyron, Lambo, Koenigsegg, Ferrari, or Aston Martin in town.
Obama and his regime should pay.
I was going off the above line in the story, which stated that they sent bills off to the White House, the DNC, the Secret Service and both homeowners.
Now they're talking about putting a lien against the property of the two homeowners who hosted events, as I doubt there's much White House, Secret Service or DNC property within the town's limits.
It still seems that the town has some belief that the American people should foot the bill for a private event, in two of the entities that they sent invoices off to.
The way I read it, it was the 2 homeowners who threw the bash(s), not taxing ALL the home owners in town.
I'd say that was a real good thing!
They collect $3M for the DNC but bitch about a $6K expense for security and cleanup? I don’t know why any town, filthy rich or dirt poor, should be stuck paying for that. The hosts/beneficiaries should bear the cost. What next? Stiff the caterer?
Is the bill $8,000 in total or is it 8K per homeowner? Surely they spent more to host the parties.
Either way, 8K seems to be a very low bill. I’m surprised it’s so cheap to protect and clean up after obama.
Filthy mouth aka Erin Sherbert
And I’m betting this so-called journalist is a registered nut aka Democrat.
