Chris Christie appoints NJ Attorney General Jeff Chiesa as interim senator
Politico ^ | 06/06/2013 | MAGGIE HABERMAN

Chris Christie has appointed New Jersey’s Attorney General Jeff Chiesa, a former federal prosecutor who worked for him as governor and as U.S. Attorney, as the interim senator replacing the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg.

“I said on Monday I was going to select the person I thought was going to be the best person to represent New Jersey between now and Oct. 13,” Christie told reporters. “During the last few days as I’ve gotten to deliberate on this decision, it became clear to me that Attorney General Chiesa would be the best person to represent the people of New Jersey in the United States Senate.”

Christie said Chiesa does not plan to run for the seat in the special election.

“I’m perfectly comfortable with that decision,” he said. Chiesa had not been among the names circulated in the early short-lists mentioned by Christie insiders.

Christie announced the selection at a news conference in Trenton, shortly before he was set to leave for a GOP donor retreat in Utah with Mitt Romney, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.).

Christie’s pick came three days after Lautenberg passed away at age 89.

Christie had said he wanted to move speedily to fill the seat. But given the timing of the special election he set — the general election is Oct. 16, followed by an Aug. 13 primary is Aug. 13 — the appointment will be relatively short-lived.

I said on Monday I was going to select the person I thought was going to be the best person to represent...

You mean a person that would have no intention of being an incumbent, so that the "R" nominee later would have to start from scratch?

Ok, got it.

RE: Well, at least he’s a Republican!

The important question is this — What important issues will there be that needs a conservative vote between now and October 2013?

AND HOW WILL HE VOTE?

Well, at least he’s a Republican!

Not encouraging, considering Christie is as well.

Will be good as a count holder in the Senate, though.

New Jersey Attorney General Jeff Chiesa outlines priorities
Associated Press By Associated Press
on January 29, 2012 at 8:00 AM

For the past two years, Jeff Chiesa had just one client: Gov. Chris Christie. And when he wasn’t working for him as the governor’s chief counsel, or as Christie’s executive assistant at the U.S. Attorney’s office, he was working alongside him in private dating back 20 years.

Now, as the state’s newest Attorney General, Chiesa is the one setting the agenda and overseeing a dozen divisions, more than 650 attorneys, and the New Jersey State Police.

In an hourlong interview with The Associated Press, he said it’s a role he never envisioned for himself but one worth embracing.

Dingy Harry won’t swear him in for at least a month. That’s roughly the amount of time he made Scott Brown wait IIRC

Why would Chiesa leave an elected, longer-term position for a cameo in the Senate?

From earlier today:

Christie Struggles to Find a Senate Contender

Kean Jr., Kyrillos, Doherty, O’Toole – the list of Republicans who are not running seems to grow by the hour. This development only helps Steve Lonegan.

Christie is also expected to soon announce his interim appointment to the U.S. Senate. But with so many Republicans deciding against a run, the likeliehood of the appointed senator running for the seat is dimming.
