Hes basically accusing them of making a mountain out of a molehill, emphasizing that no matter how egregiously the IRS behaved, they couldnt stop the groups from operating without tax exemption. They could still go out there and preach the tea-party gospel; theyd just have to do it, at least for awhile, without the benefit of 501(c)(4) status that liberal groups have comparatively little trouble obtaining. Tough it out, wingnuts. Presumably, if a high-school student applied for federal college loans and the application was held up for discriminatory reasons, McDermott would shrug and say, hey no ones stopping the kid from finding the tuition money elsewhere, right? Technically true, but waaay beside the point.
And of course, as Kelly notes, discriminatory processing of tea-party applications does affect how the groups operate. Some groups, fearful of IRS intrusiveness, wont apply for exemption at all; some people thinking of starting a group might decide not to.
The key bit here, via Twitchy, comes at around 2:40 when Kelly presses McDermott on what one witness said yesterday about losing out on a $30,000 donation because the group couldnt obtain 501(c)(4) status in timely fashion. McDermotts reply: How do we know thats true? Testimony is testimony, but wheres the evidence? And thats where we are this afternoon, with a top Democrat insisting hes not blaming the victims while idly wondering if theyre lying to Congress, and whether maybe they should suck it up on the exemption process when liberal groups arent being asked to.

“Jim McDemott to Megyn Kelly: How can we be sure these IRS tea-party victims are telling the truth?”
Well, as pointed out by CBS, yes CBS
Democrats were allowed to provide any “progressive” groups to testify and they could not find one.
He’s not doing himself any favors calling normal Americans “liars”. Man needs his butt kicked bad!
Hey McDermott, are you willing to put your meager silly little life and reputation behind it?
In other words, if they are found to be telling the truth will you then crawl up your own smelly little Obama and increase the value of the world measurably?
5.56mm
This guy is probably the worst slimebag in Congress, and that’s saying a lot.
Oh gee, I don’t know Jim, perhaps because there are records of the encounters.
Oops, I pulled an Obamadork...it’s McDemott.
Good grief, that liberal dork cannot even spell his own name correctly. ;-)
As if we are ever sure you and you ilk tell the truth either asshat.
How can we tell that any Democratbastard Socialist is EVER telling the truth? Orwell was right.
Yes he is. I have no doubt that McDermott gave aid and comfort to the enemy in the run up to Gulf War II. Furthermore I have no doubt that his name was mentioned a couple of times in those captured Iraqi Documents that the Dems demanded be taken out of public view for security reasons (yeah, I know).
Maybe they should just go out and illegally tape record someone and leak it to the press like he did and to try to steal another election.

2006
A federal appeals court ruled today that Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., violated federal law by turning over an illegally taped telephone call to reporters nearly a decade ago.
In a 2-1 opinion, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled that McDermott violated the rights of House Majority Leader John Boehner, who was heard on the 1996 call involving former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
The court ordered McDermott to pay Boehner more than $700,000 for leaking the taped conversation. The figure includes $60,000 in damages and more than $600,000 in legal costs.
McDermott leaked a tape of a 1996 cell phone call involving former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to The New York Times and other news organizations.
Too bad he didn’t stay just a few days longer as Saddam’s “human shield.” He could’ve been “Shock and Awed” out of existence.
McDermott is an a**hole on the same level as Alan Grayson.
Jim McDemott to Megyn Kelly: How can we be sure these IRS tea-party victims are telling the truth?
Well we know for damned sure he isn’t telling the truth and neither is the IRS or Obama, et al.
McDimwit
He has had two wives already that didn’t want anything to do with him. Maybe he should try men for a change. They probably won’t take his crap any more than the wives were willing to put up with.
And this is how Obamacare will be run by the left, when a Republican needs a procedure done they will say “Hey, why should we give that Conservative a new lung, he’s a Conservative, he doesn’t deserve it” get ready people, this is just the beginning
