100 students ejected from NYC to Atlanta flight for being too rowdy
FoxNews.com ^ | 6-4-2013 | Associated Press

A group of about 100 high school students traveling from New York to Atlanta were thrown off a flight, along with their chaperones, after the pilot and crew lost patience with some kids who wouldn't sit down and put away their cellphones.

The teenagers, all seniors at the Yeshiva of Flatbush, in Brooklyn, were ordered off the AirTran flight around 6 a.m. Monday as it sat at a gate at LaGuardia Airport.

AirTran's parent company, Southwest Airlines, said in a statement that flight attendants asked passengers several times to take their seats and put their mobile devices away. The airline said that when some didn't comply, the captain repeated the request. When that didn't work, either, the whole group of students was ordered to disembark for safety reasons, the airline said.

The flight was delayed for about 45 minutes while the students filed out of the Boeing 737, which seats about 137 people, leaving the plane mostly empty.

Rabbi Seth Linfield, executive director at Yeshiva of Flatbush, said that administrators were still looking into the matter Tuesday, but that he believed adults on the trip who said the students weren't behaving that badly.

"Preliminarily, it does not appear that the action taken by the flight crew was justified," he said in a statement.

Asked whether he thought 100 teenagers were too many to keep in order on a flight, Linfield said the school has taken similar-size groups before without any problems.

Mistakes are easy to make. Claiming Yeshiva of Flatbush is ultra-orthodox is a mistake. A mentsch would admit the mistake and move on, not change the subject and obfuscate.

Would you be as sanguine if I started a chain of comments maligning the Jesuits and complementing the Maronites in a thread about the Pope?

You seem to be misreading everyone's affiliation here.

Borges is not a Catholic.

And while I know you have never said anything critical of Catholics even once since you have been on FR, that really is beside the point.

I was maligning no one.

I’m sure that you are not aware that these kids are MODERN ORTHODOX, not “ultra-Orthodox Jews”. I don’t know to which type of “trend” you refer as developing in New York—rowdy teenagers or being an “ultra-Orthodox” Jew. And, BTW, what does it matter whether they were Jewish students, Amish students, or purple students? Why did you feel a need to especially point out that they were Jews? Do we offend you in some manner? Go pound sand.

The article states that they were Jews...the clarification was what sort of Jews. If a sect of Catholics did something it would be relevant to state what sect they were.

And how many do observant Catholics average? Probably much the same. So long as they support their kids, how many children anyone has is THEIR business, not yours. Or are you one of those who enjoys peeking through keyholes?

When will these kids learn to keep a copy of the Koran in their hands, so they’ll be untouchable?

Before I begin, I ask one favor of you, wardaddy; please read this post in its entirety before checking out and posting that you have no use for anything I say and calling me a "scalawag." Please do this one thing, and then I don't care what you do afterwards.

Your attack on wideawake (apparently based on an argument carried from another thread in violation of FR rules) is uncalled for.

1)There are still racists and anti-Semites on FR, though they aren't as bad as they used to be (when I first registered here the place was crawling with them). And I have seen some pretty awful posts by you myself (I've also seen some very good posts by you).

2)Wideawake has consistently defended rural Southern Fundamentalist Protestants from their detractors, which is absolutely amazing considering that he is Catholic (the attitude of most Catholic FReepers to Fundamentalist Protestants needs no elaboration).

As you probably know, I too am a Southerner (though from the Upper rather than the Deep South), though my own ancestors (like many Southerners in every Confederate state except South Carolina) fought for the Union. I too love the South (while disagreeing with certain aspects of traditional Southern culture like jim crow and slavish adherence to the Democrat party), but the most important thing to me is that it is the Bible Belt. I may no longer be a chrstian, but I am Bible-bangin'est son of a gun you will ever meet. And that means One G-d and One Truth that applies universally.

I admit to not liking "palaeoconservatives." "Palaeos" are not Fundamentalists at all. They are utilitarian "civilizationist" intellectuals to whom Abstract Universal Truth is "subversive;" it undercuts traditional local norms. But that's the whole point: "traditional local norms" are pagan! The whole point of chrstianity was (theoretically) to destroy the "old 'gxds'" ("traditional local norms") and replace them with the One True G-d (which it's done a lousy job of doing, btw). This failure is easily seen by the mutual hatred between chrstians of different ethnicities (Black and white Americans being the most obvious, but far from the only, example). It is obvious that each ethnicity has created a "gxd" in its own image and put its racial identity over and above its religious identity (and please recall before you have an aneurism that I am one of the most caustic critics of contemporary "Black culture" and politics on this forum!). If Black and white chrstians really put their religious identities first, then a Black and white Baptist marriage wouldn't be considered a "mixed marriage;" a white Baptist and white b*ddhist marriage would be! In short, "palaeoconservative" civilizationism is really no different from the attitude of Communist "national liberation" terrorists: "Deze are de wayz of our pipplez!"

In closing: anyone who worships his ancestors, his culture, his civilization, his "way of life," etc., is an idolator, and idolatry is the greatest sin of all. If your loyalty to G-d is based on loyalty to your ancestors (rather than vice versa), then you may be very disappointed at your day of judgment.

You’re right. A lot of folks in flyover land mistake New York rude for a Jewish thing. Probably because, unlike most New Yorkers, Jews actually make it outside of the confines of New York City, and are the only New Yorkers a lot of people have ever met.

I read once that a lot of the stereotypically "Jewish" characteristics (as defined by many Americans) are really just Eastern European characteristics picked up by Jews in Eastern Europe (which is probably where most American Orthodox Jews' ancestors came from). A tourist who had recently visited Eastern Europe commented "the people seem so Jewish!"

Okay . . . not it's probably my turn to get called an anti-Semite by someone. Why can't I simply be "anti-Eastern European?"

openly generalizung about orthodox Jewish youth

False. I was doing precisely the opposite.

you were assuming most Harlem households had convicts in them

Completely false, and already refuted.

you howled you were offended

I'm not a big howler, I'm afraid.

If I disagree with you, I will disagree with you.

called the mod on me

Not a habit of mine.

you slur Dixie

Again, false. I love the South. I am not a fan of the Confederacy. And yes, those are two different things, despite people frequently confusing the two.

You’re a damned hypocrite and should have stayed gone with Ivan

I presume that this is a reference to the "wide awake" website that MadIvan set up after his opus.

As I told him at that time (and received no response) - I was not happy with him using my screenname for his site without even asking my permission. Which he never would have done, since he was a supporter of Giuliani for the GOP nomination and he knows I would not endorse a pro-abort if there were any pro-life candidate left.

Amazing the amount of excitement one can generate by trying to have a conversation based on ideas instead of slogans and name-calling.

Again, I'm not fully conversant with what all has happened here, but it is quite possible that there is more than one "Yeshiva of Flatbush." Mainstream media is as bad as anyone at mislabling, and they could have misunderstood a yeshiva in Flatbush as "Yeshiva of Flatbush," thus misidentifying Chasidim as "Modern Orthodox."

Wideawake remarked that because Chasidism is growing (and it is along non-Chasidic Charedim, thank G-d!) that traditional institutional governance is coming under strain and this sometimes leads to misunderstandings with the greater community. This happens in any and all communities experiencing such growth and does most certainly not constitute anti-Semitism.
