Teen denied diploma, fined over Native American feather
QMI AGENCY ^ | June 4, 2013

An Alabama teenager was denied her high school diploma and fined $1,000 for wearing a feather on her graduation cap to celebrate her Native American heritage.

Escambia Academy High School in Atmore, Ala., makes its students and staff sign a pre-graduation contract agreeing not to wear "extraneous items during graduation exercises unless approved by the administration."

Chelsey Ramer, 17, tried in vain to get approval to attach an eagle's feather to her graduation cap as a symbol of her Native culture.

"They told me that if I wore it that they would pull me off the field," Ramer, a member of the Poarch Creek Band, told NBC affiliate Local 15.

But Ramer wore it anyway and refused to sign the dress-code contract.

The school wouldn't give Ramer her diploma. She now has to fork over $1,000 to get it.

The teen, however, regrets nothing.

"It was worth it. It means a lot to me," Ramer said.

The gay basketball player wasn’t Muslim either (good thing for him, I guess).

As long as the individual is trumpeting anti-Christian causes/beliefs, then, in the eyes of this administration we have a Presidential Medal of Honor candidate before us.

Escambia Academy has been providing a solid foundation for its students for 40 years. We are an independent, co-educational, day school, providing a quality education from K-4 to 12th grade. The school is structured into elementary, middle and high school divisions. It is a non-profit organization governed by an elected Board of Directors and supported by tuition, fees, donations and fund raising.

Escambia Academy is fully accredited by the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

Escambia Academy’s mission is to provide a solid foundation through a quality well-rounded educational experience in a safe, Christian environment, supported by a fully accredited academic program that is dedicated to the students’ intellectual and personal growth and development.”

It’s a school that apparently tries to instill Christian values. Your statement is out of step with the biblical instruction to honor those who rule over you (Heb. 13)

She graduated from school, so they no longer "rule over her." The graduation ceremony does not take place before you graduate, but after. It is merely a recognition that you have completed school.

BTW do you "honor" Obama, the IRS, Janet Napolitiano, Eric Holder, Valerie Jarrett, Kathleen Sebelius?

BTW the command is to "remember" not to honor. The verse refers to those who "led" you not those who "ruled over you." The context is in regard to those who were martyred for the faith or otherwise had died. The command is to remember the sacrifice of those who have fallen and to follow the example of the dead saints and martyrs.

No, Yeshua never commented on anyone’s raiment.

As for the feather, there is little chance that we are getting sufficient detail in any news story to discern the full truth.

We all “calmed down” Way too much.

We’ve allowed the Earth worship to become the national religion by our failure to get hot enough.

Well, how about this one?

"Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well." 1 Peter 2:13-14

“She graduated from school, so they no longer rule over her. The graduation ceremony does not take place before you graduate, but after. It is merely a recognition that you have completed school.”

Just wow! This sounds more like something her fellow graduating class members might say. She was at the school’s commencement, a ceremony offered by the school. As such, they had in place certain requirements pertaining to their ceremony. Not only did she dishonor the school, but she dishonored her fellow classmates, as well, by injecting into the ceremony (a ceremony given for all) her own little act of rebellion. You may be technically correct in saying they had no rule over her in light of her status. But the school had the right of expectation of one of their alumna/one of their guests/attendees to adhere to the proscribed rules of decorum that they set forth in advance of the ceremony.

“BTW do you “honor” Obama, the IRS, Janet Napolitiano, Eric Holder, Valerie Jarrett, Kathleen Sebelius?”

By obeying the laws of the land, yes, I do.

“BTW the command is to “remember” not to honor. The verse refers to those who “led” you not those who “ruled over you.”

Heb 13:7 Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.

Actually, the verse refers to those who have spiritual oversight over you (elders). But, to the point, how does one “Remember” one who rules over them, except they [continue to] honor them?

What if someone wanted to wear a Confederate flag, however small, to honor their Southern heritage?

I have a feeling that's why the rule was enacted in the first place. Just a hunch.

Yeshua’s very presence is a comment on all the law. He said, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.” Do you think His silence on a matter means He is indifferent to the matter? Where does He speak out against homosexual behavior? Abortion? Taking drugs?

Do you think Christ walked about in woman’s garb?

Do you think Christ would have countenanced one of His disciples to walk around in woman’s garb?

She should have worn a burlap bag over her head like the koranimals do and she would have been okay.

She should scatter a couple of eagle feathers in the back yard of the principal, or whoever is giving her trouble, and then call the state Fish & Wildlife service, saying that she saw them kill an eagle...

Bearing false witness is your solution. You do know that filing a false police report is a crime itself.

But she upset the apple cart of the conformist bureaucrats. For that she must be punished.

She was demonstrating that she never learned the ultimate lesson of the government educational temple. The lesson that begins while standing in line to go to the bathroom in kindergarden: "Thou shalt conform to our cookie cutter."

No offense but its funny to hear conservatives railing against conformity like the hippys and beatniks did in the 60’s and 70’s. The fact is that a society needs a certain amount of conformity and people exhibiting self control to function properly. That is something hippys never grasped. I have no problem with making kindergardeners line up to go to the bathroom. They need to learn to listen to instruction, stand quietly, be patient, wait your turn, etc. The alternative is chaos in the classroom (which is currently found in many schools). We dont want complete conformity but some is required for society to function smoothly.
