Teen denied diploma, fined over Native American feather

An Alabama teenager was denied her high school diploma and fined $1,000 for wearing a feather on her graduation cap to celebrate her Native American heritage.

Escambia Academy High School in Atmore, Ala., makes its students and staff sign a pre-graduation contract agreeing not to wear "extraneous items during graduation exercises unless approved by the administration."

Chelsey Ramer, 17, tried in vain to get approval to attach an eagle's feather to her graduation cap as a symbol of her Native culture.

"They told me that if I wore it that they would pull me off the field," Ramer, a member of the Poarch Creek Band, told NBC affiliate Local 15.

But Ramer wore it anyway and refused to sign the dress-code contract.

The school wouldn't give Ramer her diploma. She now has to fork over $1,000 to get it.

The teen, however, regrets nothing.

"It was worth it. It means a lot to me," Ramer said.

Not many people poached eagles for feathers in the midwest, and they became very rare there too fifty or so years ago.

I have a wonderful recipe for poached eagle.

Eagles nest in dead trees ~ or, as one did in my backyard, on a large dead branch where they could walk out, then launch without hitting any other branches.

The American practice of controlling fires in forests was to cut down and dispose of all dead trees. That way the Potomac River basin, a primary habitat for eagles since time began, was quickly cleared of eagles.

Then one day they figured out what it took for eagles to nest successfully and make new eagles. We leave a lot of dead trees up. The eagles came back. They are everywhere around here.

It’s a school that apparently tries to instill Christian values. Your statement is out of step with the biblical instruction to honor those who rule over you (Heb. 13)

Private school. I disagree with this - but they should have pulled her from the ceremony and awarded her her degree.

In any case, nobody’s forcing her to graduate from there.

"Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material" (Leviticus 19:19)

"You are to make tassels on the corners of your garments, with a blue cord on each tassel" (Numbers 15:38).

"A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor a man wear women's clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this." (NIV, Deuteronomy 22:5)

There's just a few quick ones from the Old Testament. You can find more if you take some time to research. Also some in the New Testament.

She should scatter a couple of eagle feathers in the back yard of the principal, or whoever is giving her trouble, and then call the state Fish & Wildlife service, saying that she saw them kill an eagle...

Someone would go to prison over that...

I actually read a few more articles on this case, and in some of the interviews, she did "whine":

"I don't think it's fair at all. I feel like it's discrimination," the 17-year-old says.

“I feel like this wasn’t fair. It felt like it wasn’t legal,” Ramer said. “It really did hurt my feelings."

Tomorrow, Obama will send the little princess smoke signals from the White House chimney asking her if she's okay after all the victimization.

In a few years we'll see her decked out in feathers, braids, moccasins, carrying a fake papoose in a sling on her back demonstrating angrily in an Occupy Little Big Horn squat-in.

Thanks for the reply.

The references posted show that the biblical constraints on raiment, are not really so strict, and are given for sensible reasons.

BTW, the ‘fringe’ refers to the doubled blue thread that is to be woven into the corners of the cape, which is often simply called the “garment.” This is the part of Yeshua’s garment that the woman with the issue of blood touched to be healed.

None of them relate in any way to a feather attached to a head covering.

Everything called out in the NT refers to the same thing in the OT. The NT is primarily the announcement of the fulfillment of the promises of the OT.

Scripture shows us that the Word (Yeshua) did indeed comment on dress.

And, no, nothing about feathers...

But, yes, something about humbling oneself...something about honoring one’s father and mother...something about obedience...something about denying oneself...so, in the case of this little scholar, yes, something about her feather. It is the sin-nature that puffs us up and makes us assert our “rights”. In Christ, we have our example, who, being in the form of God...humbled Himself and became obedient...obedient unto the death of the cross.

And she was asked to lay her feather aside...
