Over the last several months, it has become pretty clear that when it comes to ratings, MSNBC struggles during breaking news events, while CNN and Fox both receive boosts. In an interview with the New York Times this morning, MSNBC chief Phil Griffin essentially conceded the breaking news mantle to the other networks, telling viewers that his network is not focused on that sort of coverage.
In what seems like a stunning admission, Griffin said: Were not the place for that, he said of breaking news. Our brand is not that.
Instead, he explained, MSNBCs bread and butter is progressive political talk and analysis. While this may be true, the stable of NBC News correspondents who work so hard to break news on MSNBC, and often do it very well, cant be happy that Griffin appears to be diminishing or even throwing in the towel on their important work and coverage.
When asked about this as a long term strategy Griffin noted that Fox had its lowest quarter in a decade and CNNs not yet out of the ratings gutter entirely. Lets not be so myopic as to think the whole world has changed, he said.

They should have a slogan..MSNBC..if your constipated, watch us, you will have instant diarrhea
The hell they didn't!
in other words, they’re not even a news organization.....
What NBC calls “NEWS” is always either last month’s,
or next week’s projected, weather.
Why? to protect Obama and keep their taxes low to zero.
He meant “Our network is not the place for any news.”
Or truth in journalism>
No, it's the place for breaking wind.
MSNBC is more like Jay Carney’s sound booth.
LSD-NBC “Our network is the place for unhinged liberal bias”
I actually agree with him on this.
MSNBC is simply the place to hear Democratic talking points get discussed.
Oh it’s most definitely the place with broken NEWS.
Where, oh where, is Captain Obvious when you need him?
The don’t need breaking news because they’re already broke.
Correct, it’s the place for Democratic Party propaganda. Wonder if Chris Matthews still has his direct line to the White House.
Their job is to follow the instructions from His Arrogance and his lackeys regarding the news .... they are not to be creative, inquisitive, etc. ....just follow the damn instructions.
I like it!!!!!
While we have from time to time come up with joke slogans for the network I don’t think we have imagined anything so elegant, descriptive, and (by the CEO’s needing to say it) damning.
“admission”: “concession by a party to the existence of certain facts.”
We’ve been saying for years that they aren’t news agencies, but are political propagandists for democrats (”progressives”). They always denied it until now.
