Chris Christie's Lautenberg Dilemma Is 2013-as-2016 All Over Again
The Atlantic Wire ^ | June 3, 2013 | ELSPETH REEVE

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie can name a successor for Frank Lautenberg, who died at the age of 89 on Monday, becoming the 299th Senator to pass away in office. But it's yet another moment when what's good for Christie in 2013 might not be good for him in 2016. Christie, after all, is a Republican running a state that voted for President Obama by almost 18 points.

"Replacing a Democrat with a Democrat and then saying the voters should decide what happens next in November would no doubt be very well-received by Democrats and moderates," The Washington Post's Sean Sullivan writes. But that would mean Republicans who are already annoyed with Christie and his Obama-hugging antics would disown him

To understand the difficult position Christie's in, look at these two tweets: "What lucky Democrat will Democrat Chris Christie appoint to Sen. Frank Lautenberg's seat?" conservative thriller author Brad Thor asks. Salon's Joan Walsh adds: "Hey Dem donors giving to Chris Christie: will you rethink if he picks a Republican to replace Lautenberg?"

I hate to say it, but to be fair to the voters, Christie should select a Democrat.

Me either, if he is the best the GOP can muster they deserve the ass kicking coming their way again.

He’s a liberal doesn’t matter if there is a (D) or (R) in front of their names, a liberal will always show their slimy colors eventually.

Wha wha HUH?????? He’s the governor. He was elected. Its his job to pick a successor. Why should he pick a Democrat?? But if we’re going that route, I suggest he pick another 89 year old white democrat who’s got one foot in the grave (seems fair).

Christie already has NO CHANCE for the Repub nomination in 2016, no matter who he appoints.

After the Mitt fiasco, what idiot would nominate (or vote for) another East-Coast Liberal RINO?

My betting is that he’ll name former governor Thomas Kean to be a “caretaker”—and take that action early enough so that an election will have to be held November 2013. That way he’ll cause some trouble within the NJ Democrat establishment.

Would 'fairness to the voters' influence any Rat governor you know of if a Republican senator passed away in office?

Can anyone name any Democrat governor who ever named a Republican to an open Senate seat?

It doesn’t matter much....he could appoint a conservative ( if there are any left in NJ), the. The dems will retake the seat in 2014

By trying to satisfy both sides. He’ll pick an Olympia Snow-like RINO. Then again he could pick himself.

The Democrats screwed over the voters to GET him the seat! To be fair, Christie should pick a Republican.

There is no problem for Fat Christie.
He will either appoint a liberal democrat or a liberal Republician.
You can rest assured he will NOT appoint a conservative.

I disagree....he could win the nomination. If Rubio, Paul, Ryan, et al split the vote on the right, Christie could win. No chance in hell he wins the general then...

I have not been keeping up.. or I would have realized why Obama has been so attentive.

Christie will "repay" Obama and appoint a Democrat.

The dem brand is quickly falling, so Chris better do the right think and appoint a conservative.

“Fairness” is the bullsh*t excuse the collectivist NJ State Suprmeme Court argued when it violated NJ election law to permit Lautenberg to come out of retirement to replace Robert Torricelli when Doug Forrester was way ahead of RT in the polls. To hell with “fairness.”

No. We are not a parliamentary system. We cannot assume that someone voting for a senator who happens to be a Dem or a Rep needs the successor to be from the same party, or even the same ideology. Christie should pick the best human for the job.
