Reuters) - Russia plans to resume nuclear submarine patrols in the southern seas after a hiatus of more than 20 years following the break-up of the Soviet Union, Itar-Tass news agency reported on Saturday, in another example of efforts to revive Moscow's military. The plan to send Borei-class submarines, designed to carry 16 long-range nuclear missiles, to the southern hemisphere follows President Vladimir Putin's decision in March to deploy a naval unit in the Mediterranean Sea on a permanent basis starting this year.
"The revival of nuclear submarine patrols will allow us to fulfill the tasks of strategic deterrence not only across the North Pole but also the South Pole," state-run Itar-Tass cited an unnamed official in the military General Staff as saying. The official said the patrols would be phased in over several years. The Yuri Dolgoruky, the first of eight Borei-class submarines that Russia hopes to launch by 2020, entered service this year. Putin has stressed the importance of a strong and agile military since returning to the presidency last May.
In 13 years in power, he has often cited external threats when talking of the need for a reliable armed forces and Russian political unity. Fears of a nuclear confrontation between Russia and the United States has eased in recent years, and the Cold War-era foes signed a landmark treaty in 2010 setting lower limits on the size of their long-range nuclear arsenals. But the limited numbers of warheads and delivery vehicles such as submarines that they committed to under the New START treaty are still enough to devastate the world. Putin has made clear Russia will continue to upgrade its arsenal. Russia's land-launched Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) would fly over the northern part of the globe, as would those fired from submarines in the northern hemisphere.

The Russian military talks about buying and doing a lot of things they never actually do.
They’re actually in pretty dire straits militarily, many of their new procurement programs have been disasters, corruption is beyond belief and soaks up much of their military spending, patrol rates are very low, and their ambitious future procurement plans rely on rosy assumptions about the price of oil and gas.
So I guess this means we only have seven times as many SSBMs as the Russians, carrying only 10 times as many missiles.
wth is Russian “strategic deterrence” over Antarctica?
I get the feeling Putin really dislikes Obama; strange how I fear the Russians less than I fear our own Govt...
There is a new sheriff in town.
Russia obviously feels that the world must have at least the appearance of a hegemon.
They're already here.
Yeah, but they just sold a bunch of Anti-Aircraft missiles to the middle east Muslim Brotherhood (which we paid for), so they should have some extra cash.
So what’s the R&D budget for ASW research?
Russian SSBNs hardly ever leave port.
This will either never happen, or there will be a single brief patrol just south of the equator in the next 10 years, to great fanfare and hype, but ultimately meaningless.
Pretty enormous. Much of it is "black."
Russian SSBNs are pretty far down the list of concerns.
Source?
Beats me, but I get the sense that Russia is feeling a void that America has left, that they would like to occupy.

Putin has Obama measured!!! The Russkies are working Obama like a puppet, as are the Chinese & Iranians.......or Obama could be right in there with Putin & Company working for the destruction of the USA!!! Nothing would surprise me when it comes to traitor POTUS Obama & his disgusting ilk of america haters!!!
I can’t help remembering Sarah and her watchful eyes.
Say what you will about the Russian submarine fleet, but this is a much newer design than our “current” class of SSBN’s which have been patrolling the seas longer than most of their crews have been alive.
It’s in the tens of billions of dollars.
There’s no budget line item called “ASW” of course. And it’s scattered throughout the budget books. You have an assortment of ASW R&D by ONR, DARPA, under multiple Budget Authorities.
Then you have the actual platforms you are procuring. The primary P-8 mission is ASW, but it’s used for other things as well. Do you count ALL of the P-8 spending as ASW? Or just part of it? What about the DDG 51s - ASW is one of their many missions. Do you just count their helicopters, towed arrays, and sonars as ASW spending, or do you count part of the cost of the hull and crew? Do you count the cost of the ASW training for the crew?
Part of the mission of the Virginia class submarine is ASW - how much of that do you count as ASW spending?
