Ohio State president: Gaffes partly due to Mormon faith, isolation in Vernal when young
The Ogden Standard Examiner ^ | June 1, 2013 | Staff

By his own admission, Gordon Gee is an unlikely university president.

Born during World War II in Vernal, Utah, Gee took an unfamiliar path to be head of one of the nation’s most prestigious schools — Ohio State University.

Now, the intelligent, quick-witted rural Utah boy finds himself embroiled in a controversy of his own making, which may be due in part to his roots.

“Despite leading universities for more than half my life, I am a most unlikely university president. Unlikely by virtue of several factors — academic background, temperament, faith, and family history,” he told the Columbus Metropolitan Club in a March 27 speech.

The speech was given after a controversial speech last December in which Gee mocked Notre Dame, Roman Catholics and the Southeastern Conference, but before accounts had been reported by the media.

On Friday, details of a March 11 letter sent to Gee by the university’s board of trustees was reported by the Associated Press. The letter said Gee’s December comments embarrassed and divided the university and run the risk of diminishing the effectiveness of its efforts.

Then he goes on to say this:“Those kinds of off-hand comments do not reflect my own thinking, and certainly they are not Ohio State’s ideals. Twentieth-century values have no place in a forward-thinking world, and I take that very much as my own responsibility as a leader.”

He will take responsibility, head up a study that makes sure that this kind of thing never happens again, and then moves on...

He’ll follow in the footsteps of Hillary! She took responsibility for Benghazi, (wink, wink) and the press dutifly dropped the matter. (It’s only because of the families of those killed that kept the issue alive that Comgress is investigating it today)

Gee! And those retrograde 20th century values! Time to ditch them since there is no place for them. Just how did our parents and grandparent muddle through two world wars and the Great Depression? /s

Nashville was saddled with this imbecile running Vanderbilt (and his bat$hit crazy, drug-addled activist wife came as a part of the deal). My condolences to any locale who has to deal wit him.

OK here is the thing that interested me. The Dinosaur National Monument sculptures in Vernal were made by Elbert Porter, born and raised here in Orderville, UT. He also made a bust of Maynard Dixon

Brother Gee has been reading too much of the doctrine written by McConkie IMHO.

The joke is they had this guy before, he left, and they hired him back after 10 years of screwing up two other schools.

Those kinds of off-hand comments do not reflect my own thinking...au contraire, those kinds of off-hand comments precisely reflect, better, reveal your own thinking.

Good question. Most of these types play the role but have coffee in secret in the faculty lounge. And they send their "little people" to the liquor store.

Sort of like fired sports coaches hailed as incoming heroes at their new team.

Gee is a total embarassment to TOSU community and State of Ohio. He makes Biden sound like a man whose pronouncements are well thought out. Past time for Gee to retire or be removed from office. While they are at it, the football program needs to be dismantled and reestablished with correct priorities. The direction the program is taking under Urban Myer frightens me. Please realize that this is said being an TOSU 72’alum.

I grew up in a small town in Utah too...Isolation does not cause stupidity. When old Gordo was on his mission to Germany,
the book “Mormon Doctrine” was read extensively as an inspired document. That “great and abominable” thing was quoted by all the missionaries. Me too as I was in Denmark.

I managed to get over it though. Amazing how certain indoctrination sticks.

“Most of these types play the role but have coffee in secret in the faculty lounge.”

Frankly, I can’t blame them; I tried ‘Mormon Tea’ when I was camping in Utah and it is plumb pitiful.

Mind you, the publicly available coffee in rural Utah wasn’t much better back then in the pre-Starbucks day. ;^)
