As late as last year, the FBI ran a child pornography operation in an attempt to nab its customers. The service ran for two weeks "while attempting to identify more than 5,000 customers, according to agent's statements to the court."
Court records indicate the site continued to distribute child pornography online while under FBI control; the Seattle-based special agent, a specialist in online crimes against children, detailed the investigation earlier this month in a statement to the court.
The methods used in the child pornography ring depart from traditional investigations, "historically, child pornography investigations stem from tips made to law enforcement, interactions with undercover officers posing as customers or reviews of documentation seized during searches of child porn clearinghouses like the one recently raided in Nebraska."
The Bureau seized a website on November 16, 2012. It operated until it was shut down on December 2 and at the time, it had more than 5,600 users and 24,000 posts. "At least 10,000 photos of children being posed nude, raped or otherwise abused were broadcast through the site."
Discussions ranged from how to avoid detection by police and "how to lure a child in my car." Agents were unable to identify users through the service records, so the site was allowed to continue in order to gain more information about the patrons.

My main concern would be whether the FBI transmitted pictures to lure pedophiles.
Fast and Furious, part deux ?
Does the FBI ever break cases anymore? Is everything they do bait and trap now?
Fast & Furious, Part DUH!
The only way I would okay something like this, is if this were going to be the last case ever, and all pedophiles would be taken off the streets for ever.
Since that isn’t going to happen, there’s no way I would okay this.
What’s the FBI plan to do, be in the pedophile business forever? Seriously, if it’s okay this once, then doesn’t that mean it’s always okay to do this?
WTH do these people use for moral composes these days, Mohammed?
If the FBI distributed child porn, are they as guilty as the perp?
Also, wouldn’t a defense attorney correctly argue that said distribution of child porn makes any arrests stemming from website visitation a case of “fruit of the poison tree.”
The FBI may have shot themselves in the foot on this one.
Sure doesn’t seem so with all of the fake terrorism cases.
During the 60’s the FBI planted people in the KKK and other organizations, they also planted people in Motorcycle clubs in the 80’s. Why is it surprising that they plant people in kiddie porn?
Yup. There are lines undercover cops shouldn’t cross, but they do have to do some pretty bad things if they are going to maintain credibility with the groups they’re infiltrating.
Producing new kiddie porn by abusing children is one of the lines that should never be crossed, and hopefully one they would never even consider. Using already existing porn to trap users is very close to the line, but one that I can deal with from an ethical standpoint.
How this plays out legally is of course another issue.
From the article: "At least 10,000 photos of children being posed nude, raped or otherwise abused were broadcast through the site."
That doesn’t mean that it came from the FBI.

> Ah the internet, where men are men, women are women and 13 year old girls are FBI agents...
And homosexual and transgender whackos are the opposite sex....
I do not believe there are any allowable uses for the distribution of Child Pornography. I believe that everyone involved in this is as guilty as the people they distributed it to. You have to be pretty sick to think this was a good idea.
Goods for the feds, on this one.
These FBI agents probably viewed the pedophile ring gig as a job perk.
I’m sure the parents of the kids whose pix went out the door in those 2 weeks share your enthusiasm..../s
This was wrong in every way wrong can be defined. This isn’t adults. It’s kid porn.
