El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa referred to state Sen. John Morse as a criminal during a fundraiser Tuesday in support of a lawsuit against new gun restrictions.
The comment, which drew thunderous applause and a standing ovation from the crowd of about 815, came after Maketa said he and the 54 other sheriffs who filed the lawsuit have been met with typical rhetoric despite being open and transparent.
Heres the most recent one I heard from a senator that comes from this county that I wont even give him the honor of mentioning his name: There are a very small group of people that dont want to see these laws passed, Maketa said, referring to Morse.
Really? Is he in touch with his electors or anyone else on this planet? No. He is bought and paid for, and I have no problem saying that because if you track the money, it takes you to the criminals, he said.
Now I know people are out there going, Oh geez, did he just call somebody a criminal? I did, Maketa said.
Its not the first time Maketa and Morse, the Senate president, have traded barbs over the gun-control legislation.
On Tuesday, Maketa followed up his remarks by saying he predicted someone he has come to admire and respect would explain that little slip of why I call them criminals.
Maketa was apparently referring to David Kopel, an adjunct law professor and research director for the Denver-based Independence Institute, which hosted the fundraiser. Kopel was the featured speaker at the event, held at the Freedom Financial Expo Center.
Sheriff Maketa, I guess, sort of indirectly asked me to clarify his remarks on the criminals, follow the money thing, Kopel said. It sounded to me like a powerful metaphor in the same sense that if somebody says, I am the door, you are the rock. Its not meant literally that I actually have a handle on me and Im a room divider and youre made out of basalt. Its figurative language.
Kopels comments sparked laughter from people in the audience and on stage, including Maketa.

From the WH on down the Dems do seem to largely be criminals.
There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Ayn Rand
The proper term is “Enemy of the US Constitution”.
Abridged has specific meaning; ask a lawyer.
That term needs to be used insistently and very, very often.
On the other side of that coin if there were only one law and it was ‘don’t look cross eyed at your neighbor’ every Dem in DC would be cross eyed.
