As Towns Say No, Signs of Rising Resistance to Smart Meters
NY Times ^ | May 18, 2013 | Chris Hooks

BRADY, Tex. — In October, the City Council of this Central Texas town voted unanimously to purchase advanced electric meters, known as smart meters, for the city-owned electric utility. But some residents resisted, and the smart meter vote played a large role in last weekend’s recall of the city’s mayor and the electoral defeat of two council members.

Voters here passed a referendum last weekend to enshrine in the City Charter the right of residents to refuse the installation of smart meters on their property. Sheila Hemphill, an organizer of the effort, called the victory her “San Jacinto.”

The reaction in Brady could signal a shift in the debate over smart meters, which collect detailed data on electricity use and transmit it to the utility using radio frequencies.

… “The ultimate goal of the smart grid, of which smart meters are a part, is to connect us internationally to share the power we generate with the world,” she said. Having its own grid provides the state with autonomy it would not have otherwise, she said. “We’ve survived all these years without being connected to another grid,” she said. “Why should we change that?”

In case you want prospective burglars to know when you are not home?

The goal of smart meters is to bring government tyranny directly into your home to limit your energy use at the whim of bureaucrats and their (and your) political masters.

The BATFE will know too and be able to schedule your gun confiscation appointment for a safer time (for them).

Oh cmon, they never do the no knocks when nobody is home. That ruins all the fun.

They require there be small children, old people or shootable dogs to be at home.

Didn't she play Shirley on "That's my Mama"?

Wouldn't it be fun to hack AlGore's smart meter and limit that hack's electricity at will?

We could put the controler on a web page for public use.

I don’t know about other states but California’s “Green” Public Utilities Commission is in lock-step with the power companies (and the administration) to ration electric power. No matter how little you use they keep raising rates to make sure utilities pocket big profits (with the PUC’s blessings, of course).

Southern Calif. Edison allows you to opt out of the Big Brother meters — for an additional $30 a month on your bill! BB meter installation is coupled with a big publicity campaign for “free” government money to subsidize solar panel installations. It’s not like we’re being herded into a taxpayer paid “Green” corral or anything like that...is it?

They changed our without notice. Supposed to save us money by not having to pay for meter reader, still waiting for savings.

My utility co did the same thing, but since they never sent meter readers when we had a dumb meter (but made pretend they did and charged us whatever the hell they wanted to), I am actually saving 50-75 bucks a month due to being charged for my actual usage.

Bastards had been ripping me off for years.

I don’t know about these meters, but at least the citizens of Brady rose to action for something. Most towns would do nothing to protest much of anything.
