The Kansas Legislature continues to grind toward a tax agreement today. Its tempting to snicker at the chambers inability to actually pass a budget after working at it for three months, but we should cut lawmakers some slack. Remaking an entire state takes time.
Much has been made of the continuing gridlock in our national government, brought on largely by the polarized nature of our two major political parties. Divided national government, in our time, is a recipe for dysfunction.
But a much different dynamic is playing out in state governments. There, one-party control is becoming the norm.
According to the Pew Charitable Trusts news service Stateline, 26 legislatures have become more Republican since 2003. The GOP holds a strong grip on legislatures in the Old South, the Plains, in some Rocky Mountain states and the industrial Northeast.

We need to take more state governments.
If only that were true....
One Party Rule never seemed to be a media issue when the American Soviet Party held the majority of power in state legislatures.
‘Pew’ Charitable Trust is aptly named.
Fine. Deport the damned socialists.
Yeh ain’t it a beach that GA is totally GOP. Red baby. LOL!!!
One party rule ain’t working so well in CA.
Its working pretty good in Michigan.
Soft secession sure beats the hell out of civil war and it sure ain’t our side which wants to force our model on the other side.
Glad you posted the link. I have not purchased the Kansas City Red Star or Kansas City Falling Star paper sonce November 2008. I was unaware that Dave Helling was even still alove to report the lies that his editors give him to publish.
By the way Our Gov of KS the Honorable Sam Brownback is doing a great job as is the Elected Members of the KS house and Senate.
I know one thing - republican controlled states passed no new gun control laws.
There is considerable support for losing the winner take all electoral system in Michigan and going by districts won. That would give us a fighting chance.
I’m not sure how to overcome the disastrous 17th amendment for electing senators.
Mrs. Helling’s little Davy probably wouldn’t be whining about this if it was the DemocRATS who were the “one party” running all of the states.
Fair enough. As of now, where are people deciding to live? The author doesn't mention hard numbers, which are already available.
You go Georgia girl! Unfortunately Pennsylvania suffers from New York & Jersyitis. So if anyone from a true blue red state wants to come here, we have great hunting and snowy winters.
Our asshat GOP Chairman then proceeded to strong-arm wavering legislators so it wouldn't get out of committee. His excuse: We can win them all, we don't want to divide electoral votes and Pennsylvania's influence.
What we should have said: so what, it will be a blow-out election if and when we do.
How that jag-off managed to keep his job is beyond comprehension.
Wisconsin is doing a lot of good things, too! Finally! Never thought I’d see it in my lifetime, again. :)
The more we separate as states, I would think the more it becomes a bipartisan issue to move things from the federal government to the states, and a repeal of the 17th amendment would be politically possible.
We need to take more state governments.
Yes, cripplecreek, and reassert states' rights against the feral government in Washington, D.C.
