MEMORIAL DAY: MUSIC OF THE CIVIL WAR

We begin the second part of our retrospective of the music of that era.

This was sung in every camp in both armies and with enthusiasm. Stephen Foster knew how to write ‘em.

”The Glendy Burke”

Two years ago I moved from Seattle to a quaint Revolutionary War fishing village on the Georgia coast. One thing I noticed is that nobody sings this song in Georgia. Hmm, I wonder why. The North sure liked to rub it in.

”Marching Through Georgia”

The South kept the Union Army out of Richmond until the very end of the war. Here the South rubs it in.

”Richmond is a Hard Road to Travel”

The Irish fought on both sides, but they formed the basis of the Union Army’s NCO corps. This Irish tune was sung around the campfires of both armies. Here is James McCracken.

”Kathleen Mavourneen”

The Irish gave the Union Army a fine gift of song. This is a good example of what the sons of the “ould sod” were singing around the campfires.

”The Minstrel Boy”

The Scots-Irish sound is all over this song about the Southern cavalry.

”Riding a Raid”

Known today as “Swanee River”, this Stephen Foster classic was sung around the campfires of both armies. This version by Tom Roush uses the original politically incorrect 1851 lyrics.

”Old Folks at Home”

This is Tennessee Ernie Ford singing a song about the death of a Union soldier. The song was considered good enough that the Confederates picked it up.

”The Vacant Chair”

Until Gettysburg, it was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War.

”Shiloh’s Hill”

Those who remember my weekend of the music of Louis Moreau Gottschalk will remember that although Gottschalk came out of New Orleans, he took a stand for the Union, tirelessly holding concerts to raise money for the cause. This was his signature piece on those tours, a fantasy on Union songs from the war.

This nonsense song was a personal favorite of both armies. This is Shirley Temple singing in 1934.

”Polly Wolly Doodle”

Even Lincoln thought this was a catchy tune. It was the unofficial national anthem for the Confederacy.

”Dixie”

Kentucky, a border state, found itself on both sides of the conflict. This Stephen Foster tune has been cleaned up over the years, but this Robert Shaw Chorale version from the Fifties uses the original lyrics.

”My Old Kentucky Home”

Early in the war, the South had a lot to crow about. Here are three examples of that before Grant tipped the balance of the war.

”Stonewall Jackson’s Way”

”All Quiet on the Potomac”

”Flight of Doodles”
