It is well known that Alawites make pilgrimages to Christian holy places and seek blessings from Christian priests, etc which makes them hated by Sunni extremists.
This “weakens both sides” argument needs to end - the side that the Alawites are on protect Christians. The death of Christians is not a win in our column even if they are to western eyes the funny eastern Christian kind with the beards.
Always suspected you of having AlQaida sympathies ~ best you read the entire thread before making choices like that.
The argument that the war weakens both sides is technically correct, but callous. Strategic, not loving.
The Russians and Chinese back Assad, and so does Iran and Hezbollah. Al Qaeda has a faction (it is the strongest of the rebels). And there is a small pro-Western faction.
Just because Russia, China, and Iran are fighting Al Qaeda does not mean that they are our friends. Far from it.
nobama’s friends want to kill others? Who woulda thunk it?????
Israel is going to get a lot of Christian immigrants very soon. Hope they then get rid of the pro-Palestine, pro-Hamas and pro-Hezbollah so-called Christian clergy there.
Of all the states in the Middle East and much of North Africa, it is only in Israel that Christians are safe.
THAT SAYS IT ALL!
Are you kidding me? I want Al-Qaeda gone along with the Baathists, and let Israel take the whole thing over.
Repent!
I want the Muslims to kill each other, not the Christians.
Want is not enough. On side has a history of not murdering Christians, but even now the other sides murder all of them they can find. Obama and McCain are allied with the guys murdering Christians.
Sooner or later Western civilization, and that includes Christians, must realize that it is in an existential fight with islam. To deny it is suicide. To try and separate ‘good’ mooselimbs from ‘bad’ mooselimbs is nothing but moral masturbation.

“You side with the Sunni you sign their death warrant.”
I don’t “side with the ‘Sunni’ “.
Yet idiots in this country want the U.S. to, on the mistaken notion that an enemy of my enemy is my friend; a mistaken notion the American people have been led to believe in, in spite of what that notion produced in Afghanistan between 1979-1989 - built up Al Queda and helped the Saudis and Pakistani ISI to create the Taliban.
Without a dime from the U.S. Russia was going to lose Afghanistan in time anyway, and we would not have had the pretense that the governments that followed the Russians ever were or would be our friends.
As much as we have our own problems with Russia, the Islamists are a threat to both of us.
Russia, no matter what it does in the Middle East in its opportunism to sell more Russian weapons to help shore up its sagging defense budget, is no match with our resources in the region.
“The protection of Christians should be our dog in this race and should serve as the basis of our foreign policy.”
The only way to do that would be to actually support Assad, under whom Christians fared fairly well. But that won’t happen, even if we backed off our support for the “rebels”.
Assad did not sign a peace agreement with Israel, but in spite of that the Israeli-Syrian border has been relatively peaceful, minus the last time Israel had to put down Hezbolla.
I don’t expect that defacto comity with Israel to continue under any government led by the core leadership of the “rebels”.
“Like the Shia Iranians or not (and I do not) they at least give their Christian minorities legal and political and religious rights (limited as they may be) compared to the Saudis.”
A known fact our “all informing” media has refused to report about our “friends” the Saudis.
“For some stupid reason the USA backed a play in Syria that now is a lose / lose situation for the USA but because of inertia”
The American State Department & CIA machinery was hijacked (with quaint sounding names for funding programs approved by Congress) into an agenda that is not our own, in service of Islamists alligned with Saudi Arabia to depose Assad BECAUSE he is an Alawite (heretic sect from a Sunni point of view) and BECAUSE he made friends with the regime in Iran which is contending from the opposite side of Islam, the Shia side, for Islamic supremacy in the region.
As bad as Assad was, he was not the cuase, he was an excuse.
Like in Egypt, many who support the “rebels” and many who joined them have no idea what the core leaders of the Syrian opposition hope to create in Syria. If they did, they too would be refugees now themselves.
The U.S. has to take its blinders off and quit thinking that some Islamists where white hats and some where black hats. None of them are our friends and when I say that I am not talking just about the terrorist type. In fact some of those who are not terrorists are worse because they have been tunneling into western society from within (with the help of immigration), with long term goals for Islam in our society no different than the terrorists.
You are still arguing on behalf of murdering all the Christians ~ we already know that’s what this crowd of Sunni fanatics want to do ~
“Isnt Iraq now controlled by shiates?”
Yes, and the same religious proxy war - between Shia Muslims and Sunni Muslims - fed and led by fundamentalist Islamic figures on both sides, was the socalled “civil war” the militias were fighting against each other when we were in Iraq - the same terroristic war against each other that continues in Iraq today. There too, none of it is intrinsicly in the general interest of the Iraqi people, but it is Islamists on both sides that are on top of it.
