I don't know if this type of terror/violence is yet the norm in London, but it certainly will be -- there, here, and every other big metro area in the Western world where they let these glowering dirty foreign Sharbouks settle, just like Cambridge MA where the Boston bombers lived.

I was just in London (and Paris) last Fall and lost count of how many Hk MP5/SFs I saw being toted around by London police here and there, but we typically stayed put in Westminster where there's lots of embassies and high-profile targets for terrorism. They also seem to have cop cars emblazoned in bright orange colors which denotes 'armed police' are inside.

I suspect they carry semi-auto restricted Hk SMGs because they appear fearsome, are easier to use with less skill than a typical pistol sidearm, only use moderately-powered handgun bullets just like pistol sidearms, and are really big and hard to lose/drop/have taken from an officer in a scuffle. One observation I made is that the Hk MP5s they carried had locked screws in place of the factory assembly pins where the stock mates to the lower receiver, presumably to prevent any unauthorized dis-assembly or intent to conversion to full-auto fire.

In France, the police are armed just like in the US. There's also government police and soldiers at all the train stations and tourist points -- Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Louvre, etc. I actually saw some hooligans get arrested by the Paris police outside my hotel room at night. What a hoot that was. Paris police do not mess around.

I don't know how your officers would react in a situation like this, but I lived most of my life in Los Angeles and can assure you they'd be shooting people who weren't even involved in this just because they kinda sorta matched the description. Look back at that LAPD 'rogue officer' Chris Dorner incident and see what I mean...

... and you've already seen how Boston police and EMT/Fire Chiefs handle a terror attack, what with martial law and scaring the entire city into a shit fit over a teenage boy terrorist armed with a pipe bomb. They're still giving each other high-fives over that one and have the people of Boston believing they've got the best police force in the world.

All these incidents are proof that our personal safety is our own responsibility, not the job of farcical politicians, pretentious police chiefs, or hyperactive patrol cops -- none of whom will be anywhere near you in case something bad goes down. Anyone living in an area where they're prohibited by law from suitably defending themselves has only the person in the mirror to blame if anything dreadful happens.

I agree...and you’ve made some pretty remarkable observations in your travels.

I have little faith the police can do much but show up...and that not in a timely fashion ...crimes happen quickly and it’s simply unreasonable to expect them to be there at a moments notice...at best they may apprehend the criminal after the fact...and it’s not necessarily thier fault more couldn’t be done.

Next step will be this: British Police everywhere will start posting guards on Mosques and Islamic Centers to protect against the “Backlash against Muslims” (which somehow never materializes). Also, we can expect British Police to start rounding up members of the EDL immediately! The British Parliament will have an emergency session and demand that British Foreign Minister be sacked immediately for the failed British foreign policy that resulted in the anger of the Muslim attacker. Poor things. What are they SUPPOSED to do other then hack British soldiers to death. I’d say that the Muslim animals who chopped off the head of this soldier certainly ran the street where it happened. Where were the neighbors and residents on that street who should have poured into that street with knives and hatchets to save that man?

You people need to get locked and loaded with small arms. Here in America, we have a law called the Castle Doctrine. It allows Americans to protect themselves, their families and any citizen against assault by criminals.
