Kaitlyn Hunt, an 18-year-old high school student in Sebastian, Fla., is facing charges and has been expelled from school for having a same-sex relationship with a 15-year-old classmate, CBS Tampa Bay reports. The facts of the story seem to change depending upon the source. According to several accounts I read yesterday, the parents did not find out about the sexual relationship until after the girl was already 18, and they notified the police immediately. And according to the reports, the sexual relationship did occur after the girl was over 18. Whether it also occurred before she was 18 is not clear.
I think people forget just how much difference there is between a 14 year old and an 18 year old in terms of expereinces and mental growth, personality growth, maturing.
You look at the kid leaving middle school, and look at the young adults leaving high school, and there is a world of difference.
As a matter of law, who started the affair is irrelevant. Just ask any number of guys who went to jail seduced by a girl who told them she was over 18...

Hard to imagine a century ago or so, girls were married by 16, isn’t.
I’m not sure the older girl is criminal, but the law is the law and she should be treated just like a hetero would be. If the law needs to be changed, change it but it is what it is and she is probably sh..-out-of-luck.
Rape is one of the most charged and almost self-convicting charges that can be leveled against someone. It is life changing, and can mean instant and prolonged incarceration.
That’s why I cringe at the idea that a few seconds can transform someone from innocent love status to one of a pariah, consummately evil and deserving of society’s long and lingering hatred.
What are the ramifications of vote or not vote? What are the ramifications of drink or don’t drink? Both of these are more or less wink-wink nod violations when it comes to the penalties.
So no I’m not saying all age related standards are wrong. What I am saying is that there is an awful lot riding on the rape parameters, and it does bother me someone could be judged so differently just a few days later.

Hard to imagine most people didn’t live much past 50 more than 100 years ago.
You don’t allow children to enter into binding legal contracts. This is part of it. Mental age is another. Going through puberty and hormone fluctuations. Brain development that we now know doesn’t even really slow down in a major way until 25.
The fact that there may be an immature 25 year old that finds a mature 14 year old a match, doesn’t mean we scrap a law that works in virtually every case. If an exception ought to be considered, that is what a specific court case is for, that doesn’t necessarily apply to anyone else as it has specifics for that particular case.
Who started it is immaterial. The victim did not have the legal ability to consent.
I have had clients in this situation where the parents get mad and call the cops on what is, quite honestly, not the type of predatory behavior these laws are intended to prevent. A guy who is 18 dating a 16 year old girl for example. And then if he gets convicted he has to register as a sex offender which carries a whole load of disasters from housing to employment. Frankly, these types of situations do not warrant such drastic punishment and there should be room to take account of the difference between some 50 year old with a 16 year old vs. 2 teenagers.

I agree. I appreciate the comments. It seems to me the type of situation should help determine what’s right or wrong here.
If a guy takes advantage of some girl for pleasure, vise versa, perhaps it should carry more weight. If the two are involved in a real relation ship with the best of intentions, it would certainly seem different to me.
These threads always amaze me. If you have a 30 year old woman having sex with a 15 year old boy, its a big joke and the boy should be happy to be getting some. If its an 18 year old girl with a 15 year old girl, people are citing to the statutory rape laws and calling for the 18 year old’s execution.

Although whether or not that is true, it is a side issue, but with a brother two years older than me, and with that he may have for part of a year had an age that was three years more than mine, and with both of us in sports and with many mutual friends, guys and girls, you are incorrect, in my case that “a eighteen year old don’t normally hang out with a 15 year old”, and I suspect you are incorrect in the case of many teens today.
