Large tornado confirmed on the ground.
Weather service has issued a Particularly Dangerous Situation warning.
It destroyed the entire mobile home park in Shawnee..and took a semi truck blown off the highway that’s insane!
OK
KFOR
Reports of debris already reaching southwestern Tulsa Metro area.
The myth was created by that overpass video from a tornado in Kansas - it was a very very weak tornado, but there was a much more well known F4 tornado nearby, and people were under the impression they had survived a powerful tornado by sheltering under the overpass.
In the Moore OK tornado there were people that left their homes and deliberately drove to climb under overpasses who were maimed.
Evidence suggests the overpass likely just increases the winds under them.
SPC doesn't issue tornado warnings, local weather offices do.
And Granbury had a normal warning time.
And then a truck was blown off the overpass too. Looks really bad.
Tom...I had to tend to some things here....is this that huge storm with serveral tornadoes in it, still on the move?....
Shawnee was hit very hard in some areas.
Gregg Jarrett from Fox was one of those folks.
OK
KTUL TV
The 3 tornados from the Shawnee area have now merged into a single supercell. Tornado is still active, on ground, possibly for at least the next 30 minutes.
<....”Evidence suggests the overpass likely just increases the winds under them”...>
That’s what I saw....the wind was fierce...they had tremendous difficulty holding on....that in a “mild” tornado! So it really isn’t a place to hide out under.
According to KTUL out of Tulsa, the 3 tornadic cells have merged into a massive supercells.
Nearing Bristow now. Heading more toward Bixby/Beggs area than Tulsa proper.
Expects it to stay formed and on the ground for at least 30 minutes.
Thanks TomGuy....where is it now located? Sorry trying to catch up.
Ok Got it!
Prayers up for all in the path.
Dear Lord, hear our prayers.
Tatt
Yep, it actually concentrates the force of the wind.
Another myth I recently heard was that a bathtub is a safe place to ride out a storm. Thats true but only if the bathroom is located on the lowest floor of the house and in the interior.

The only place that would be, would be an underground shelter. Given the choices at hand, there are times when abandoning your vehicle and running to get beneath a highway overpass is the best, most logical and safest choice to make, out of several such possible choices, none of which are ideal.
Calling it a “myth” may feel good to those seeking to appear knowledgeable and it may actually serve a useful purpose in a very limited set of circumstances, but it might also get someone killed, who decides to ride it out in a car which is turned into a projectile, or decides to lay down in a ditch or culvert and is scoured with dirt and rocks with large debris dropped upon them.
KFOR is showing the Shawnee, OK area—a lot of homes completely destroyed.
Prayers up for everyone in the path of these things!
Peggybac,
I was born n bred in SoCal; went thru Sylmar ‘71, Whittier narrows, and Northridge; I lived south of LA airport 30 miles away and all 3 felt like I was going to be thrown out of bed/couldn’t get up off my chair.
No warning; I’m in Texas now and someone asked if CA had warning sirens for quakes .....
I said no, nothing, you find out when you hear the rumble or you start to feel a little vibration or if the cats start freaking out.
Girls wear rings on their middle fingers...and just about every other finger, too. :)
Just sayin’......
