Two members of Congress are asking if the Treasury Department disproportionately targeted more Republican or conservative owned auto dealerships during the government-lead restructuring of General Motors in 2009. Breitbart.com reported today that Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Jim Renacci (R-OH) released a letter asking Treasury Secretary Jack Lew to release documents regarding the process and methodology that determined which GM dealerships were closed.

I know Chrysler dealerships owned by conservatives were targeted. Don’t know about GM. Did they even close any GM shops?

Yes they were and a lot of the ones that were closed were profitable while the democrat ones that were allowed to stay open were not.

When TRYING TO SELL CARS Why would you close successful dealerships?
AND... why only REPUBLICAN-OWNED dealers?

Absolutely they targeted GM shops. I remember an owner of a profitable GM dealership who interestingly was also involved in conservative causes being interviewed on the news wondering why his dealership was being closed because they moved good volume. I remember thinking how outrageous it was. There was a thread on here about this specific guy and dealership speculating that he was targeted for his political beliefs.
That whole decision stank and made little sense to me then or now. In light of the latest revelations it makes one wonder what criteria was used by the government to close private businesses.

Immel Motors in Fredericksburg, TX used to carry all three; Ford, Chevy, and Dodge. Because of politices, Immel lost the Chevy and Dodge franchise. BTW, Gillespie County, TX is solid red (as in conservative, not commie. Commie should be red).

It’s truly remarkable that it has taken these people nearly three years to catch up to this travesty. Where in the heck have they been?

The letter requests, We formally request that the Treasury Department provide all e-mails, phone records, notes, memoranda, reports, and other communications regarding the decision-making process for dealership closures from the Automotive Task Force headed by Car Czars Steve Rattner and Ron Bloom." If I am not mistaken, Rattner resigned from his Car Czar post unexpectedly and in a bit of a huff.
Sometime later, he voiced complaints that the "dealer selection process" had been "tainted by politics".
Sounds like a job for another Committee...
