Majority of pools are contaminated by poop, CDC says

There's poop in public pools, according to a new report.

Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found genetic material from E. coli bacteria in 58 percent of public pools they tested during the summer of 2012.

This shows that "swimmers frequently introduced fecal material into pools," which could spread germs to other people, the researchers wrote in their report. E. coli bacteria are normally found in the human gut and feces.

They also found genetic material from bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa, whichcan cause skin rashes and ear infections, in 59 percent of pools.

The fecal material in pools comes from swimmers not showering before getting into the water, and from incidents of defecation in pools, according to the report. The average person has 0.14 grams of fecal material on their "perianal surface" that can rinse into a pool if a person doesn't shower first, according to the report

The worst pool I ever got into was back in 1959, Bottomless Lakes State Park in New Mexico.

The water was not clear and so alkali it make me sick! Years later I found the local Military base posted warnings on base that the lakes pool were contaminated.

Whereas the pool at the school in Tatum NM was clear but had so much chlorine in it my eyes burned for hours after swimming.

For christ sakes. If the pool is well maintained then all is well. take your own test strip if you are afraid. Jees people just live in a bubble and do nothing. God forbid you come in contact with a germ.

No wonder kids grow up so sickly, parents are so afraid of exposing them to germs, their immune systems never get a chance to develop properly.....it’s like a muscle, “Use It Or Lose It.”

The problem is people taking babies and toddlers into pools. Any child who is not potty trained, should not be allowed in a pool. Swim diapers don’t hold in germs. Yuck.

Most things public are poop! When something is owned by everyone, nobody seems to take care of it.

Things which are public that I avoid. Pools, buses, subways, trains, airplanes (because of TSA), toilets (hovering is the only safe way), schools, PBS...

The private sector is not perfect by any shot but at least I can withhold my money if I am not satisfied. Try not paying your taxes.

” to that present in natural bodies of salt and fresh water that have animals doing their business in them and have all kinds of run-off going into them. I am taking a wild guess that swimming pools are cleaner than “nature”.”

Just ask the victims who drank Milwaukee water. Oh wait! You can’t! The Crypto killed them.

What I didnt like about Schlitterbahn is that it takes an hour or so to go on one ride.

I wound up spending the day with my kid in the lazy river. Got out, had a turkey leg and back in we went.

no kidding

freepers always jump off the cliff as concern bots

im old

been in pools forever..and will this summer at our little club pool a mile away..which has a diving board btw....something else concern ninnies have destroyed

still here for now

who would deprieve their kid of pool time with their buddies over this alarmist garbage

like you said....any pond or slow moving stream except in really cool places will likely be worse

i was at very high altitudes many years ago hiking (13,000 or so) between Ouray and Lake City CO near the Animas rivers and drank high above the tree line spring or snow leak water and got sick as a dog on the drive back to Dallas ...

years and years I had drank from mountains in Smokies and Appalachia to Alaska...and later in the Andes and Blue Mountains JA..and Alps too even

but that one got me..likely sheep or goat poop or marmot..something

cramps and fever ..didn’t kill me

summertime pools in Dixie...keeping your children from enjoying that is meaner than the very rare chance of a turd

and pee...does anyone think a cup of kids pee in a 100,000 gallon pool means anything?

keeping pools clean is a big help and requires a good cleaner or diligent lifeguards

“What actually causes the distinctive, irritating smell around swimming pools is not chlorine–that’s an urban myth–but volatile substances known as chloramines. Chloramines form in pool water when chlorine combines with contaminants brought into the pool by swimmers. Think urine, perspiration, body oils and cosmetics. The truth is that cleaner swimming, not less chlorine, can help reduce the chloramine irritants that cause “swimmer red eye” and itchy skin”

“I went swimming in a muddy hole in the Philippines when I was a kid, and thought it was great.

Then a big pile surfaced near me, and I nearly died. Didn’t even consider that!”

Brings back memories of swimming in cattle ponds in Central Florida. The crust on the bottom would get disturbed and huge hunks of cow poop would float up.

Afternoon at public pool + baby ruth bar = good time!

Isn't that like yelling "FIRE" in a movie theatre? Won't the stampede get someone killed?
