WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama urged Congress on Thursday to fund upgrades to US embassy security around the world, as a way of truly honouring the memory of four Americans killed in Benghazi.
Obama made the call in his latest bid to regain the initiative after Republicans accused his administration of covering up details of the September 11 attack to safeguard his re-election hopes last year.
The president said he was committed to improving security at US posts abroad as recommended by a State Department review board set up to probe the attack on the US mission in the eastern Libyan city.
"We're not going to be able to do this alone. We're going to need Congress as a partner," he told reporters at the White House.
"I'm calling on Congress to work with us to support and fully fund our budget request to improve the security of our embassies around the world."
The president also said Congress would need to help fund the posting of more US Marines to embassies and consulates abroad.
"We need to come together and truly honour the sacrifice of those four courageous Americans and better secure our diplomatic posts around the world," Obama said.
"That's how we learn the lessons of Benghazi, that's how we keep faith with the men and women who we send overseas to represent America and that's what I will stay focused on as commander-in-chief."

Reappropriate the funds from Planned Parenthood and other Dim causes to pay for added security. With this group in charge, our foreign assets need all the help they can get.
There were previous attacks. There were warnings.
We should have been on high alert around the world.

My hatred for Obama grows each and every day. Is there no one that will stop him? Are the republicans on his side, too?
When 0bama first ran for President, he repeatedly said the world was going to loves us.
Imagine being one of the family members or a survivor of Benghazi.......this would be the last straw.
Yeah, fund em.....the ones Obama wanted dead are dead.
It doesn’t matter it can happen again next year after all the funding in the world and the unaccountable one will never be called to account.

My thoughts would be that if we had a consulate or embassy that was unsafe,
I would close it and get our people out of there.
Having consulates and embassies in countries where we are not welcome?
Why even bother?

Obama has an excellent media response team. Obviously it helps to have the media in your corner, but the Bush people were a shambles in that respect.
the Department of State has not had any loss of funding for security. It is all there, but they either are not using it or using it for other purposes. Audit them.
As soon as Obama returns all that money his State Department spent :
on the fancy overpriced landscaping of the US embassy grounds in Switzerland;
on the purchase of Chevy Volts by the State Department when more economical vehicles were available;
on the music concerts hillary clinton was so enamored with;
on the propaganda ad Obama and Hillary made to air on Pakistani media apologizing for American’s having a 1st ammendment and denying the US made the video almost no one saw, or would have known existed, had they not made the ad;
on his wee daughter’s spring break in Mexico with firends and a huge security detail;
on his wife’s wasteful flight to cavort with rich Arabs in Spain;
and so on. I’m pretty sure we can think of more grossly wasteful things he can scratch up for the benefit of diplomatic security.
What level of funding does that entail. If Benghazi is the example we would have to rebuild our embassies and consulates to endure 12 hours of mortar and rocket attacks.
As usual, the king knows not what he talks about....he thinks his statement makes a good sound bite...
Old Timers would say this turd is closing the barn door after the Horse got out.
Obama thinks he is making points by now suggesting beefing up security, what he is doing is showing his absolute stupidity.
Tell you what— Make Chelsea Clinton Ambassador to Libya. You can bet there will be adequate security then.
