It is so bizarre to hear the WH press corps asking real questions and then following up when they don’t get a rational answer.
Actually — and granted that I’m speaking from my experience — the press was not out to get Nixon.
I was a member of the press in 1972. I covered the election, the major candidates. Aside from the completely appropriate adversarial watchdog role that the press should play, there was no anti-Nixon sentiment.
As a matter of fact, everyone I knew thought McGovern was a joke. His stump speeches would put you to sleep.
Recall that Nixon won in a landslide. McGovern carried only one state.
We were a different nation then, eager for peace after the turmoil of the 60s.
Virtually no one other than the Washington Post (Woodward/Bernstein) paid attention to Watergate until spring, 1973, when the burglars were tried and McCord spilled the beans in his letter to Judge Sirica. Then, on that solid news peg, the floodgates opened.
At that point, yes, the press was out to get Nixon, and he had done himself in by raising and dispensing massive amounts of cash to pay off those who could ruin him.
The timeline parallels are stunning.

Update: CNN says Holder’s not recusing himself going forward, he had already recused himself when the original decision to subpoena the records was made.
Attorney General Eric Holder recused himself from the decision to subpoena the phone records of Associated Press reporters, a source told CNN’s Jessica Yellin on Tuesday. The approval fell to Deputy Attorney General James Cole, the source said.
So this is the story? The DOJ undertook a largely unprecedented fishing expedition of reporters’ phone records to find a leak, and neither Obama nor Holder had anything to do with it?
