NIXA, Mo. —The Nixa school district is refusing to allow students to wear T-shirts emblazoned with the Confederate flag to memorialize a classmate's death.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that students wanted to wear the shirts on the anniversary of a Colby Snider's May 1, 2012, death from carbon monoxide poisoning. Besides the Confederate flag, the shirts included the slogan "heritage

“I see it more of a statement of Southern pride...”

“Heritage not Hate” is the perfect slogan for those shirts.

The Confederate flag is a symbol of opposition to the high-handedness of the US feral government.

Nothing more.

Patrimonio no odia, si se puede.

That works too, we don’t get to choose our predecessors.

I didn’t make any bigoted statements, you did. I guess you ain’t man enough to own your own behavior. Typical liberal. Always trying to point the finger somewhere besides themselves.

The article doesn't say why the flag and his memorial are connected.

It doesn't. Either Colby or his friends are into Confederate flags and identify them with things he liked to do: "mudding, hunting, fishing, being with his buddies, Ford trucks, that sort of thing." It sounds a little like they went with the first thing they thought of, rather than tinkering with the original concept for a while to improve it.

Somebody's bound to bring up Che or Mao shirts (but when was the last time anybody ever wore a Mao shirt?). It looks like the ACLU would defend students who wore Che or Mao or Confederate or pro-gun or anti-gun or pro-gay or (within reason) anti-gay t-shirts, so there's not a double standard there. They do object to flying Confederate flags near court houses or over public buildings, though.

Stupid. Would they have shirts with the Nazi emblem also...the South and Nazis lost the war and those defeated emblems belong in musems and history books. Its unAmerican to give them honor when we have the American flag a symblom which represents liberty for all.

What idiot let the school know it was happening? Just do it, let the PC panty-waists foul their knickers over it.

I think it's more a vision of the Confederacy as they wish it was more than the Confederacy as it actually was. But that's true of a lot of symbols.

Unfortunately my kids were born in Arkansas.

For those of you who aren’t aware, here are some other choice lines from the poem CVA chooses to quote from as his tagline.

I hates the Constitution, this “Great Republic,” too!...

I hates the Declaration of Independence, too!...

And I hates their striped banner, and I fit it all I could.

http://www.civilwarpoetry.org/confederate/songs/rebel.html

So proclaiming undying hatred of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the American flag is apparently viewed by some around here as the acme of patriotism.

Odd, that.

I’ll cut some slack for the author of the poem. He had been defeated and was understandably and forgivably defiant and resentful.

But I will never understand those who choose to resurrect such sentiments from a long-buried past.
