Martin Scorcese’s 1977 film “New York New York” was both a box office and critical failure, but it was a noble failure. Robert DeNiro and Liza Minnelli left less of an impression than saxophonist George Auld in his brilliantly sour performance as a jaded bandleader.

Frank Sinatra wasn’t all that enamored of his own voice, once stating that Tony Bennett was the greatest “saloon singer” of the era. But while Sinatra wasn’t the greatest singer, he was without a doubt the greatest song stylist of his era. There is a difference. Sinatra could squeeze more meaning out of a simple phrase than anyone else, and that made him unforgettable. He took this number from the movie and made it New York’s City Anthem. It debuted at #60 this week on its way to #1.

“I really like that player you are using! *hint hint* ;-}”

Do you want it? I can zip and upload the files to my site then give to you a link. The total size of the files to create the player is less than 100 K. The zip file will be much smaller.

There is nothing like this in all of music. It came in at #5 this week.

WD-40 has water in it. Not good to lubricate long-term and not for places that are not easily accessible.

Which sound card do you have now? I am still running Creative Sound Blaster Live.....two-channel stereo with old, junker speakers but since I am near deaf I cannot hear all of the highs or lows anyway. LOL

Billy Preston had made his first splash as a sideman with the Beatles and then went solo. This is beautifully produced and came in at #4 this week.

Which sound card do you have now?

I also got a Creative Soundblaster. It's a Recon 3D Fatality Professional series with THX.

I have a Bose sound system on my computer..2 speaker & a sub woofer which is kind of old..about 6 or 7 years, but it still sounds good to me.

My hearing is still good but I really need to get the eyes checked out. I've been using drugstore readers which are fine but I think my far vision is not quite as good as it once was.

It sounds a lot like something that Michael MacDonald would do, but it’s an original. It came in at #23 on its way to the Top 10.

There was a trend in song writing at this time where the verses of a song would be melodically neutral but rhythmically strong, and not until the chorus would you find a real melody. This song epitomizes that trend, which continues even today. The verse isn’t much more than one note bordering on chant, rather than real song. It made #2 this week.

This was the theme from “American Gigolo”, starring the deeply uninteresting Richard Gere, who replaced John Travolta in the role. Giorgio Moroder put this together from an instrumental track in which he asked Deborah Harry to write the lyrics. It made #1 this week.

Blondie: “Call Me”

And so we end one week of music history 33 years ago. See you tomorrow night! Cue the Rockumentary theme!

San Remo Golden Strings: “Festival Time”
