Five weeks after Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed a gun control law outlawing any retail sales for the entire product line of Stag Arms, the maker of military-style rifles unveiled a new design Thursday that its owner said will not be subject to the Connecticut ban.
From the outside, the new firearm looks identical to other Stag rifles, complete with matte black finish, pistol grip and adjustable stock. Stag owner Mark Malkowski showed a prototype of the new rifle in the shipping room of his New Britain plant, explaining why he feels certain that it's legal.
It's not a radical new concept. The gun fires smaller bullets, which are allowed under the new law even in a military-style rifle.

It is a shame that the owner does not understand the intent of his state’s law, and the vehemence behind it.
It really isn’t about bullet size, per se. It is about that “look” - that damned Black Rifle (assault rifle, to them) look. That’s all, plain and simple.
BTW: The picture supplied is not for a .22LR...look at the mags, look at the bayonet mount, the H-barrel with grenade launcher groove....all that..M-4s or equivalent
To Hell with Connecticut and anything made there!
Hey, I’d buy a hot pink rifle. Put a “have a nice day” on the stock. Rainbow colors. Yeah, that works.
When the commies come for them, they’ll see the cheerful colors...right before the flash. “Say CHEESE”.
So.... is the lower compatible with other AR uppers? The mag well compatible with standard Mags? What’s to prevent a change?
My Colt LE6920 has an ejection port cover that when flipped open says “Infidel” in English and Arabic.....ha ha..
Don’t know with these, on most AR platforms, they are (except for the very early ones where the latching pin sizes are different). But as I intended to say, I think the posted picture is NOT of their new prototypes, it looks like a picture of a couple of 223/556 M-4 clones.
There are some places where you can get the rim of your barrel laser engraved. The most popular one is “Smile, wait for flash.”
Detachable magazine? Check.
Telescoping stock? Check.
Pistol grip? Check.
Flash hider? Check.
Bayonet lug? Check.
Yup, those two firearms violates every single definition of an Assault Weapon in the new Connecticut law.
Maybe they should build a .22 that can be readily adjusted, for want of a better way to put it.
Nice. I might have to get mine done. Strap a little teddy bear to the top of the scope. Maybe one holding a heart or something.
There are already kits out there that consist basically of a new modified bolt and carrier together that replaces the AR carrier and a 22 magazine that has the outline to fit the AR mag well.
Stag’s problem is building the AR platform and it not being legal in Connecticut. They will find this new tack won’t help them. Their only real alternative is to leave Connecticut. Their Connecticut customers need to change the law.
Stag designed the .22LR drop-in bolt? I think not. Colt, HK, and many others make dedicated .22LR rifles, and I know for a fact that at least the HK makes several .22LR copies of centerfire "assault rifles."
It would be my bet that just a drop-in .22LR conversion bolt would be legal, but if you kept the original .223/5.56 bolt then you'd have the pieces for "readily converting" to an "Assault Weapon" and be in violation.
The .22LR HK 416 is not compatible with standard uppers or lowers, and cannot be converted to centerfire.
Nope...still “scarey”...
Won’t pass muster in the pantied states.
You’re missing the exemption.
Seems those restrictions don’t apply to rim fire guns.
What we really need is safer bullets.
The mechanism involves breath power and fires dried peas.
But they hardly ever jam.
Still, the Connecticut state legislature will promptly move to outlaw them.
I sold a Stag the other day. I will never buy another one. This company is dead to me. I own some truly top tier rifles... none of them are Stag and none will ever be again.
LLS
Never even examined one. All I have are two Colts (SP-1 circa 1970) and an LE6920 bought in 2009.
That’s good stuff. < hi-5>
