What began as an outburst in class is now making the rounds online. Video of a student reprimanding his teacher for her allegedly poor teaching methods has gone viral.
Several versions of the cell-phone video, which each have garnered hundreds of comments and thousands of likes since being uploaded to YouTube Wednesday, identify the school as Duncanville High School in Duncanville, Texas.
In an impassioned speech, the student criticizes his teacher for "handing them a frickin' packet" instead of providing "face-to-face" lessons.

I say this young man has an important point.
I had such a confrontation with my high school biology teacher.
When a mere circle in a cell could be attributed as a food vacuole or a fat droplet, he only allowed only one of the two answers, thereby dropping my grade to a “B”.
I gave it to him full throated, standing and pointing.
Being right, he could hardly raise a fuss. Plus, like the eGOP, he was a WUSS!

Had the same beef with the teach in a computer tech class. There were two correct answers to the test question, but one of them was preferred. I wouldn’t stand for it! I won!
Jees does that bring back memories. I have very vivid memories of the days i used to seeth as a parade of spirit killers used to waste our youth in hs classrooms. It was truly tragic!

“you have to touch their hearts” he said- wisdom beyond his years—any good teacher knows that in order to really teach kids you have to make them WANT to learn, and it starts with the teacher being passionate and face to face- there is no passion in “friggin packets” of paper...

“Handing them the freaking packet” approach is most likely mandated by the school district or administration. My wife taught in an IB school in Texas and they had a similar approach. Very bureaucratic telling the teacher exactly what to hand the students, in what format, and when and they changed it almost monthly (and because it was a low income school, she ended up having to buy all the packets herself, be it folders, envelopes, or binders- the district couldn’t make up its mind).

In many school districts, teachers are PROHIBITED from face-to-face teaching. Instead, teachers must give students packets, and the students are supposed to teach each other.
It's called “cooperative learning”, and it's one of the latest educational fads. It doesn't work, by the way.
I know teachers that were fired - yes, fired - for trying to teach the old-fashioned (and successful) way.

I've been in this profession for 20 years and there are always teachers we refer to as "Ditto Queens" because all they do is hand out the same xerox copies year after year after year!

I had that in the mid 70s with algebra 2, geometry, and trig. except my math teacher divided us by skill level. The only problem for him was I was way over the top good in Math. There were a few times I’d hand him the packet or test before he ever finished giving the slower kids theirs and always got 100. He’d tell me, “well go help your group.” I’d say, “that’s your job, do you have any more problems.” Granted at that point he’d give me really challenging problems and if on occation I got stuck he’d say, “go figure it out.” Actally it didn’t really hurt me much because I’d just move on the next problem and ask my older sister when I got home. She is way way over the top of me.
Yeah... “New Math” was a lot like “New Coke”.

Wait...there are some problems here...”you want a kid to come in here and get excited, you got to make ‘em excited...you got to touch their hearts.” Really? My teachers didn’t. They instructed and clarified. Their job was to understand the subject matter better than I did, not to motivate me or “touch my heart.” We call this generation of students the “engage (entertain) me or enrage me” generation for a REASON. The “packet” is a problem because it requires independent and evidential WORK. It’s boring and no fun. When attempting to avoid unpleasantries or accountability, the best defense is to shift blame...a political lesson these kids have learned well. Think about it. Whose responsibility is it “motivate” and “touch hearts,” and how many “packets” of work were (are) you responsible for completing?
Reminds me of when I was in a 6th grade class with some old hag. I let her know in no uncertain terms that she couldn’t handle her own students and that she wasn’t fit to teach first graders. That was the last year she taught that grade.
