Report: Sharp drop in gun violence, but most killings still involve firearms
Washington Post ^ | May 7, 2013 | Jerry Markon

Posted on 05/07/2013 2:40:00 PM PDT by Seizethecarp

Gun violence has dropped dramatically nationwide over the past two decades, but nearly three-quarters of all homicides are still committed with a firearm, the Justice Department said...

The report, by the department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics, painted an encouraging picture of long-term trends at a time of divisive political debate over guns and legislation to regulate them. Firearms-related homicides declined 39 percent between 1993 and 2011, the report said, while nonfatal firearms crimes fell 69 percent during that period.

The biggest setback for the White House was the defeat of a compromise measure to expand background checks for firearms purchases. Gun-control proponents have since mobilized to revive the push for stricter gun laws, but gun rights groups might seize on one finding in Tuesday’s Justice Department report to argue against enhanced background checks.

Less than 1 percent of state prison inmates who possessed a gun when they committed their offense obtained the firearm at a gun show, the report said.

About 40 percent of state prison inmates obtained their firearms from illegal sources such as theft or through a drug deal, the report said, while 37 percent got their guns from a family member or friend. Those findings are based on data from 2004.

Overall, the Justice Department report said, firearm-related homicides dropped from 18,253 homicides in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011, while nonfatal firearm crimes declined from 1.5 million in 1993 to 467,300 in 2011. The drop extended to schools: Homicides at schools declined from an average of 29 per year in the 1990s to an average of 20 per year in the 2000s.

Although the rate of firearms homicides for African Americans declined by 51 percent over the past two decades, that rate was still 14.6 per 100,000 people in 2010 — compared to 1.9 for whites.

"Blacks are 7x more likely to be killed by a gun.

= Guns are racist."

But, but, but...that can't be. They're called "evil BLACK rifles", after all. Oh, but that's racist in and of itself. From now on, they're to be called "evil AFRICAN-AMEICAN rifles.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

So, gun crimes are down at the same time gun ownership and guns sales are at an all time high. If we use the same kind of prima facie cause-and-effect logic used by the gun grabbers, then I would maintain that increased gun ownership and sales have CAUSED gun crimes to decrease, and therefore we need even MORE gun ownership and gun sales. That way, gun crimes would go down even more.

Who knows, this might even be a correct inference, given that:

1. An armed society is a polite society.

2. More good guys with guns than bad guys with guns is gonna make bad guys committing crimes with guns much more dangerous (to the bad guys).

“Overall, the Justice Department report said, firearm-related homicides dropped from 18,253 homicides in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011”..

Consider these stats while keeping in mind the number of guns in the population in 1993 was far, far less - probably a good 20-30 million less, than there were in 2011, and even more now.

It destroys the argument that more guns in the hands of people result in more gun deaths. It destroys the argument that it makes people less safe to own a gun.

Gun deaths decreasing steadily for 20 years, with 20-30 million more guns bought during these times, is proof more guns do not equal more gun violence/gun death.

Further all the states during these 20 years who have passed concealed carry, there have been NO wild west stories, the CCW holders have not gone crazy and shot up everyone in sight. There is NOTHING truthful at all about the objections and supposed scare theories the left bleats everytime they can get in front of a camera.

Take the firearms away and watch the urban youth kill each other with knives, axes, clubs and fists. The homicide rate will remain high in the urban center until the cultural and moral decay is addressed and society begins demanding personal accountability. Which means as long as progressives are in charge urban murder rates will remain high no matter what weapons are banned.

You could say that those firing the gun were racist.

But since almost all gun deaths with blacks are black on black, or where the black is an aggressive attacker or burglar, the left can’t really spin that very well. They just ignore those deaths because they can’t use them to further their political agenda.

They have done exactly what you said, in the UK and Australia.

And they have watch knife crimes, bladed weapon crimes, soar in these countries.

Guns are used defensively by citizens about 2 million times a year. about 93% of the time when the criminal sees the gun, they flee. never has to be fired.

on average every state that’s enacted concealed carry has seen rapid declines in crime, and a decrease in crime across the board of about 25-30% pretty much automatically after CCW is implemented.

I know from criminal interviews in prison, the number one fear of criminals was getting shot.

Also, I don't think they distinguish between justifiable homicide and murder. They probably just lump all gun deaths together.

...Not only fewer crimes, but some of that gun violence is citizens defending their lives and property. I put that in the plus side.

Here’s an interesting report:

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/RSD/CHL/Reports/ConvictionRatesReport2011.pdf

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/rsd/chl/reports/convrates.htm

Concealed carry holders are involved in approximately 0.09 percent. That’s 0.0009 or 9 in 10,000. Hard Data

According to DOJ crime statistics, guns are used by US citizens 2.5 million times per year to prevent violent crimes like rape, robbery, home-invasion and carjacking, 99% of the time without a shot being fired. (Source: GunFacts.info)

Exactly. If you trade off one dead perp for 1,2,3 or more victims of a crime being killed you get one heck of a return on investment. That says nothing about once the perp is dead, he commits no more crime against other victims.

But liberals refuse to say the death of a perp is preferable to the death of victims. To a lib they are moral equivalents. Because the perp himself is a victim of the oppressive culture he lives in.

Looking for the link but the least used guns in murders are the very ones the left is trying to ban.

We will not be successful until all killings are done using knives and ropes and poison and stuff, anything but guns. Guns are just so inhumane! They depersonalize what should be a very personal act. It is just so cold when you can stand at a distance and kill someone. Much better to slice a throat with a knife or hit a head with a hammer.

I don't think they distinguish between justifiable homicide and murder. They probably just lump all gun deaths together.

They probably don't even differentiate between cops shooting bad guys, and the overwhelming majority of black-on-black gangbangers shooting each other.

I know the latter statistic is large enough to adversely affect the US mortality rates (average male lifespan)

Interesting. Of the 120 conviction of CHL holders in TX, 1/3 were crimes relating to the carrying of a gun or “deadly conduct” (brandishing) with no other crime.
