The US Senate on Monday passed a bill aimed at ending tax-free shopping on the internet but the move looks set to face fierce opposition before it becomes law.
The Marketplace Fairness Act, which has cross-party supporter and the backing of powerful retailers, would give states the power to require retailers with sales over $1m to collect state and local sales taxes for online purchases.

Very interesting bill. I hate taxes. I love pure competition. Government seems to get in the way of both all the time.

Has the House already issued a similar bill?

All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills. If only words had meaning.

If passed this bill would require sellers to be aware of the separate taxing rates in more than 8000 locations around the country. Can you say STOOPID LAW?

The legislation would overturn a 1992 supreme court ruling that said a state could not force a retailer to collect sales tax unless the retailer had a physical presence in the state.Does a law passed by Congress trump the Supreme Court?

Bet it dies in the House.I sure hope so, but don't bet on it.
There is a lot of pressure on both Dems and Republicans from brick and mortar stores to force online outfits to charge sales tax. And of course local and state governments are greedy for the money.
To: ConservativeInPA
Name of the bill is a lie. a brick and mortar business can sell online and many do. Taxing the internet will hurt brick and mortar businesses also. It hurts the American taxpayer by taking away more of their descretionary spending. Thus it hurts ALL business.
To: Don Corleone
what law is a good law. we had enough government in the 1800’s and didn’t need to add the thousands of laws in the 1900’s
we need to go back to 1900
