Gov. Rick Perry asked the University Interscholastic League on Friday to investigate why a high school track team was disqualified after one of the student athletes made what his father called a religious gesture.
The Columbus High School relay team was disqualified by a UIL judge at a regional meet on April 27 at Texas A&M Kingsville after a student engaged in an unsporting act.
.....In his letter, Perry said he would not tolerate the suppression of religious freedom anywhere.

He is like a fine wine that gets better with age.
A Texas *ping*
My wife told me about this story. She said he touched the side of his head and then looked and pointed up. The judge said he violated a rule about “over” celebrating. Sounds to me like he was praying and giving thanks to God.
This will be interesting. What if he had jumped up and down with his hands in the air? What are you supposed to do when you win? Just quietly go to your room?
I’m reminded of the reaction of the world series teams winning every year. Imagine if they are not allowed to do anything but take their checks and go home.
IOW, this is insanity. Seriously.
Absolutely...and has such strong convictions. I feel SAFE living in Texas under his leadership!
He’ll make a good President. The party should wise up.
I tried my best to get him there last time. I think he was overwhelmed by the whole process...THIS time he’ll be a better, more articulate candidate! :)
Ive read several articles about this incident. Each article said that the team was disqualified by a “judge,” but this person is never named. Why is the media protecting this person?
I think he's a winner. He sure has been for Texas.
The only reason I can think of is that they always protect underage people of interest. He could be re-disqualified if he talks to the press. The UIL is sort of the gestapo of school activities!
He WAS recovering from back surgery. He explained that but it didn’t keep the MSM from steamrolling him. I think he scared the crap out of the e-GOP!
Sort of like our Ted Cruz does. :)
A judge at the event was underage?
The comment was about a judge being protected by never giving his name.
Perry needs to stay out of this.
Granted, the UIL rule is ridiculous and too open for biased interpretation but it is the rule and everyone knew about it. The coach can file for review of the incident though any decision would be too late. I’m sure with all the negative publicity, the judge will be sent packing and the rule will be changed for next year. Someone knows who this judge is and needs to expose who he is.
I know that’s a compliment to our governor, but I have a slightly different take to offer. Perry hasn’t changed or gotten better with age so much as he was mischaracterized and smeared with an unbelievable avalanche of distortions and lies in regard to what he’s really like. He was called a Democrat, a RINO, an amnesty lover, slow, stupid etc. As time goes on it simply gets harder and harder to maintain those smears. However, some of it still rears its ugly head on here...
Too late, bud. Deal with it.
Dittos. No one intimidates him or shuts him up.
Oops! I’m so sorry....I mis-read. That’s what I get for being in a hurry. My bad!
Good for Rick!
That’s ok - you’re still good.
:)
*whew* :)
