Scientific studies are used to support controversial social policies like same-sex marriage. But can we rely on them?
Even in scientific laboratories Georg Wilhelm Richmann is not a household name. But he ought to be. Richmann was an 18th century Russian scientist who died trying to repeat Benjamin Franklin’s famous experiment of attracting lightning to a kite. A ball of lightning travelled down the cord and struck him dead. The first martyr for the cause of science died trying to replicate another scientist's results.
The ability to reproduce the results of an experiment is a key step in the rapid progress that science has made since then. As any undergraduate in science knows, a true scientist observes, hypothesizes, predicts, and tests to reach a conclusion. We can be sure that his conclusion is unbiased and certain, because anyone can replicate it to see if it contains errors.
But what if no one bothers to replicate it? Is it really science?

The article is about social psychological studies which I don't think are funded by insurance, rather by grants from the U.S. government and various foundations. Its about research rather than treating people.
I thought when I read it it was about Psychologists defrauding their grantors and universities by dreaming up research to support the harebrained fraudulent practices of other psychologists........

Well I don’t think the author was addressing psychological counseling. My own suspicion is that the study of the human mind through a scientific approach is at best marginally useful. Questions which can be well defined and quantified about the mind are too complex to test, and questions that are easy to test are things that we already knew intuitively and give us no additional insight. Still we have many researchers in the field who are well paid and well respected, whose job it is to pretend they are conducting a hard science. I would suspect that some of these have more integrity than others, but the ones that are most richly rewarded with grants and fame are the ones that cook up conclusions that support the ideology and agendas of those in the support system...which is pretty much all left wing in this time of the history of western civilization.
well I would say the whole thing is rotten to the core. There are as many different minds and realities as there are individuals
