For more than a decade after they moved into their house in Neenah, Wisconsin, the Zwick family knew they had a Cold War bunker in their backyard.

It was not until 2010 that anyone thought to open the heavy steel hatch, climb down the ladder and explore the 8-foot-by-10-foot chamber that the home's previous owner had built to protect his family from a nuclear attack.

Floating in five feet of water that had seemed into the bunker were sealed U.S. Army boxed packed with all of the supplies a family would need to survive two weeks underground.

They make some sponges on a stick to use to swab someone’s mouth when they are in the hospital.

I tried to get my parents to build a fallout shelter that would double as a band rehearsal space. Knew of one such in San Francisco back in the day, my buddy was the only one who could jam with his band late at night without bothering anyone.

Dear Greeneyes,Kartographer, and all

You probably already know of this, but this give me an excuse to post the following information.

Cresson Kearny wrote the definitive book on surviving a nuclear war. He gives instruction on how to create expedient equipment. Lots of data on effects of radiation and what it takes to shield yourself:

This site has a link to a free download of his manual:

Similar story in my home town. There is a hardware store that was closed up one day in the late 50s or early 60s and the owner died on the way home. His widow refuses to this day to allow anyone inside the building except to do any necessary repairs to keep it closed. A picture of the storefront is at The Mighty Ironrite about two-thirds down the page with the heading “Encased in Time”.

I've dreamed of getting inside that building some day. I can only imagine what is in the back.

So tell me. Do mutant warlords rule the surface?

No. The mutants are called "Screamers" and they ooze green bile and if they touch ya' you're dead....

But we're safe down here in Topeka...

All dressed up for the State Fair.

Smart people put tractor jacks in them in case a tree lands on the door.

See “Farnum’s Freehold” for same.

I like to see test done on the food and candies.

Candies made with real sugar instead of HFCS or other poisons. Yum!

All the questions about why they never bothered to investigate, and why they got scared and called BATF, can be answered in a name:

>>homeowner Carol Hollar-Zwick<<

Hyphenated last name. $10 says they’re Obama Govt loving libtards.
