New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly is in hot water after attempting to defend the citys stop-and-frisk policy by claiming that African-Americans are actually understopped.
In an interview with ABCs Nightline, Kelly defended the NYPDs use of the tactic, rejecting the notion that stop-and-frisk is directed disproportionately at New Yorks African-American and Latino population.
The stark reality is that crime happens in communities of color, Kelly told Nightline co-anchor Bill Weir on Wednesday. About 70 percent to 75 percent of the people described as committing violent crimes -- assault, robbery, shootings, grand larceny -- are described as being African-American.
The percentage of people who are stopped is 53 percent African-American, he added. So really, African-Americans are being understopped in relation to the percentage of people being described as being the perpetrators of violent crime.
Commissioner Kelly also dismissed accusations by a Brooklyn teenager that stop-and-frisk creates a schism between the citys police force and local communities.
When things like this happen, theres no trust, said Kasim Walters, a teenager from Flatbush.
We are trying to save his life, Kelly countered. And we are trying to save the life of other young people who are disproportionately victimized.
While Kelly remains steadfast in his beliefs, an analysis of official police data casts further suspicion on the city's stop-and-frisk policy. According to a study by the ACLU, 86 percent of stops were of African-Americans or Latinos, while 88 percent of these stops did not lead to an arrest, Salon reports.
The number of innocent people stopped alone serves as ample riposte to Kellys suggestion that any demographic is 'understopped,'" notes Salons Natasha Lennard.
Still, the policy may be having an impact on New Yorks crime statistics. The citys Health Department recently reported that gun deaths dropped significantly between 2000 and 2011, the New York Daily News reports.
Kellys comments on the stop-and-frisk policy were made as the city finds itself embroiled in an ongoing court battle over the legality of the practice. The federal class-action lawsuit, filed by the Center for Constitutional Rights, is scheduled to conclude on May 16.

So you stand with those who consider the Constitution a relic of the past.

City-data shows the number going from 673 in 2000 to 515 in 2011.
I don’t agree with stopping random people without probable cause but he’s telling too much truth here.
Expect an apology soon...
LA's hispanic population is 49% vs 29% for NYC.
I’d ask what prompts you to make such a stupid remark. But I really don’t care.
I’ll just chalk it up to what YOU personally believe and move on.
The meaning of your comment was self-evident.
Not to mention your posting history of the same.
On an age-adjusted basis, Hispanics offend at about the same rate as whites vs 6-7x for blacks. Without the adjustment, it's about twice, compared to about 9x for blacks. That discrepancy is why San Antonio (63% Hispanic) is safer than either Houston (44%) or Dallas (42%), despite being majority Hispanic - only 6.3% of SA's residents are black compared to nearly 1/4 for both Houston (23%) and Dallas (25%). And El Paso, with its 81% Hispanic population is safest of all, because its black population is only 3% of the total. All of this data comes from city data.
You really believe freedom is free? There’s no cost or responsibility involved?
Get real.

Viral video: Man arrested outside Fayetteville ABC store [for drinking. . .iced tea]

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -
A video on YouTube showing a man being arrested in Fayetteville has gone viral after the man insisted all he was doing was drinking tea in the parking lot of an ABC store on Morganton Road.
I tell you that really ticks me off, big time BIG TIME...not because it diminishes stop and frisk, but because it is clearly an abuse of power not to mention that it is a complete humiliation of this MAN. Has it ever occurred to this cop to do what is trained in every police academy in the country? That you NEVER go antagonistic into ANY situation that is not a threat? “Hey fellas, how are you doing! Nice car you got there...Say listen, not to be a ball breaker, but the owner of this store is a nervous guy...Is there any chance you guys can take it elsewhere?” You start with that, if it escalates, then it’s a different story. But this guy comes in gang busters and makes himself look KKK. What an asshole. He knew he was wrong too which is why he unlocked the handcuffs.
You really believe that an ad-hominem response doesn’t show that’s all you have to say?
415 in 2012. 4 more than Detroit, which has 1/12th the population.
