Michelle Obama: Gun violence has children fearing death every day By Justin Sink - 05/03/13 12:56 PM ET
First lady Michelle Obama said that students at a high school just five miles from her family's Chicago home told her that every day they wake up and wonder whether theyre going to make it out of school alive.
In an interview with "CBS Sunday Morning" that will air this weekend, the first lady said that when she met students after delivering a speech last month on gun violence, she was struck by the extent to which fear dominated the children's everyday lives.
I mean, every single kid worries about their own death, or the death of someone, every single day, Obama said.
The first lady traveled to her hometown to advocate for new gun controls ahead of the Senate's vote last month on a bill that would expand background checks on gun purchases. The vote fell five senators short of the 60 needed.
In the interview with CBS, Obama said that lawmakers have an "obligation to these kids" to try again.
We have millions of kids living in these kinds of circumstances who are doing everything right, Obama said. And we, as a nation, have to embrace these kids and let them know that we hear them, and see them. One kid told me he felt like he lived in a cage, because he feels like his community is unseen, unheard and nobody cares about it."
Speaking in Mexico on Friday, President Obama said gun control would save lives on both sides of the border.
Most of the guns used to commit violence here in Mexico come from the United States, Obama said. I think many of you know that in America, our Constitution guarantees our individual right to bear arms. And as president, I swore an oath to uphold that right, and I always will.
At the same time," Obama continued, "as Ive said in the United States, I will continue to do everything in my power to pass common-sense reforms that keep guns out of the hands of criminals and dangerous people. That can save lives here in Mexico and back home in the United States. Its the right thing to do.
Excellent!!
Worth watching, everyone. I want to share it.
Gee, I live in Illinois, and have learned that even if you don’t tell children about the bogey man, he will have to be created.
For my eldest daughter, when she was wee, the bogey man was Hilary Clinton. Her big fear was that Mrs. Clinton would come to our front door to take her away.
Her fictional heroes included Hoss (from Bonanza), Cisco Kid, Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies and the Lone Ranger. Bat Masterson made second string. Not much fear of guns there.
If she was any blinder, Bo would have to become a service dog.
Perhaps she would like to hear what many of us adults are fearing every day? Has nothing to do with guns, a lot to do with the WH occupants.
Gun violence has children fearing death every day?
Yes they do in every Democrat run city in the US and all Muslim cities of the world.
Listen $itch, it’s holder’s people who are murdering holder’s people every day and making their life hell.
And why do you want to take guns away from honest, law-abiding non-violent people and deliberately leave them in the hands of holder’s people?
If this offends anyone, tough.
Fear is a learned/taught emotion.
Is someone programming these kids? /rhetorical
We all know that the “Gun Violence” meme is for the purpose of confiscation. That’s the obvious end-game, and everyone knows it.
0bamaCare’s endgame is Single-Payer, the equivalent of the government owning your body.
Both are for the purposes is enslaving the population to the government.
Let’s stop pretending. They want us as their slaves.
The only thing children fear every day is a mad Wookie coming into school, stealing their lunch, and replacing it with PC food.
Drama, drama, drama.
“... One kid told me he felt like he lived in a cage, because he feels like his community is unseen, unheard and nobody cares about it.”
Maybe not so shrewd.
A “community” does not have any entitlement to be seen or to be cared about. Does his community give a crap about MY community?
Dem-Lib women are clamoring for combat training and experience? How about allowing Chicago “good-gal” citizens to own guns, get CC rights and get trained by the NRA and police auxiliary and deputized to make citizens arrests.
The 70%+ single moms of Chicago would form neighborhood patrols to provide armed escort for kids from school to the projects and after-school activities as well as in the projects.
It is racist and sexist to deep black moms incapable of defending themselves and their kids. Think of the pioneer days when women knew how to defend the homestead against marauding Indians with a musket. Now he marauders are the older sons and lovers of other women in the neighborhood, but they are killing their children at random.
It would build self-esteem and open new career opportunities in the police and military and Guard who are always looking for a few good women!
“Time to encourage the honest folks who live there to buy and use guns. In fact, Id support a donation program...Id give one of my guns to a family there for free, if they will escort their kids to and from school while armed.”
We are in agreement!

What is she bitching about? Wasn’t Chicago created by and has been run by DemocRats for as long as anyone can remember? Why is gang violence in Chicago the responsibility of a law abiding gun owner hundreds of miles away?
No Moochelle. Big mouthed commie liberals like you have children fearing death when you aren’t teaching them how to perform homosexual sex acts.
How will expanded background chack help? It is already illegal for a person under 21 to purchase a handgun yet the gang bangers get them anyway.
Most of the guns used to commit violence here in Mexico come from the United States,
Provided courtesy of the ATF via Fast and Furious and the State Department to the Mexican Army where a huge percentage of guns are stolen and sold to drug cartels. Forgot that little fact, huh?
Democrats don’t want the people educated because then they wouldn’t want to vote for Democrats.
