School 244 in Flushing, Queens, becomes first public school in nation to serve only vegetarian meals

NEW YORKA New York City public elementary school has adopted an all-vegetarian menu, serving kids tofu wraps and veggie chili.

Public School 244 is the first public school in the city to go all-veggie. The animal-welfare group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says it might be the first all-veggie public elementary school in the nation.

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott says he's proud of the "trailblazing" school. He ate the new food with children on Tuesday.

A Freeper one posted here about how his brother who's a doctor shocks his new vegan patients by informing them that gas is a side effect of such a diet and can be quite a problem for some.

So now it's going to be who didn't pass gas in class. Those who don't will be identified as not eating the vegan meals and will be told to get with the program or else.

Is this a school where the kids largely eat kosher? It’s probably easier to just do a vegetarian than it is to try to keep a kosher kitchen. I don’t think it’s a big deal. If the kids want a ham sandwich, they can always pack a lunch from home.
