Let’s face it—on nearly every important issue, from gun control to immigration to gay marriage, red states are holding America back. Lee Siegel on why the South should get the hell out of the union.
Let’s not be fooled by all the bipartisan rhetoric that has been streaming out of the GOP since Romney’s self-destruction. Hundreds of thousands of petitioners in a handful of red states still want to secede? Well, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
A solid block of Southern states continues to refuse to expand Medicaid, thus squashing one of the linchpins of the president’s health-care reform. The South will likely be the last and most stubborn battleground in the fight for gay marriage. Gun control? The more the two sides seem to get cozier with each other, the faster gun-control legislation gets watered down—and more and more red states are passing laws making it legal to carry a concealed weapon. As for immigration, the red states seem to be relaxing their anti-immigrant fervor, but nothing approaching new legislation is even on the horizon.
The sad truth is that “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” can only be achieved at this point if the nation is split in half. Far from being fanciful or fanatical, the proponents of secession have a stronger grasp of political reality than just about anyone else. In fact, there are serious reasons why the North itself should take the lead in a secessionist movement.
Just think what America would look like without its mostly Southern states. (We could retain “America”: they could call themselves “Smith & Wesson” or “Coca-Cola” or something like that.) Universal health care. No guns. Strong unions. A humane minimum wage....

Make the ‘58 Chevy the official vehicle???? Does this guy know how many car manufacturers are in the South? Is he aware that his precious, yuppie mobile the BMW has a plant in Greer, SC? Or that Porsche is building their US headquarters in Hapeville, Ga? Is he aware that the Red States have most of the natural resources and farms that fuel and feed America?
I would love it if the South seceded. That’s what that Russian economist has predicted. It’d be nice to see how fast the Northeast and West Coast would fall apart.

More important, I’d like to see the red counties able to secede. I.e., the agricultural counties of CA, the farming counties of NY and PA. It is only the cities/urban areas of ‘blue states’ that are liberal and Dem. So let them survive on their own devices, their own productivity. See how long they last without the fruits of ‘flyover’ country’s labors.

This federation has been at war with each-other for 150 years and if Washington doesn’t even want to pretend to be a limited government than there is no way we can ever have peace short of separation.

One major upside is that most of the South’s parasites and moochers - - AKA, the Democrat party “base” - - would be attracted to the “free stuff” up North. The North would therefore gain the Democrat voters they crave and the South would get rid of them. Win-win!

At least he’s got the right conclusion in his head. We would be far happier and better off separate. We are after all in our hearts two different nations with very different ideas about how to live our lives and govern ourselves.
Why not simply agree to disagree?
Why should we continue to bash each-others heads in time and time again over every issue which Washington insist upon shoving down our throats?
There is of course a better option of more federalism but in 200 years the north has never been able to respect that. So why continue to kick a dead horse?

Yeah, we got our share of libs around, but we're still in the majority here. Of course, we get out-voted in the heart of Dallas County, but such is life in all mega cities. The surrounding areas are solidly red.

Interestingly, though the South is home to the major tobacco companies and to carcinogenic Coca-Cola, the highest incidence of many types of cancer happens to be in the North. Which just proves that the stress of living alongside the Confederacy is now seriously affecting our health.
So YOUR high cancer rates are OUR fault?

I’m with this guy, although I’d include Alaska and the Great Plains with his little goofy plan, along with much of the Great Basin and parts of the Southwest. Yes, let them go it alone. Good luck. Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

We got a number of practical problems all of which can be sumed up with one word “Lincoln”.
More northern like this liberal need to speak up and change the ideological of their countrymen towards clearly accepting our PEACEFUL separation. Otherwise y’all are just going to have to wait till we got enough guns and defenses stockpiled to enable us to blow your sorry butts off the face of the earth, should y’all try to stop us as Lincoln did.

Actually there is one Blue State with the Mason-Dixon in it, MD. Those of us unfortunate enough to reside here want to change the state slogan from “Free State” to “Freedomless State”. It is personal opinion the Mason-Dixon is a state of mind but actually runs slightly above Fredericksburg, VA.
Also, the South has most major military bases. They can pay us protection money;)
