(CNN) -- At the start of the 1980s there were more than a million elephants in Africa. During that decade, 600,000 were destroyed for ivory products. Today perhaps no more than 400,000 remain across the continent, according to Samuel Wasser of the University of Washington, who is widely recognized as an authority on the subject.
If this level of killing continues, if elephants continue to be slaughtered for trinkets and statuettes, in 10 years' time most of Africa's elephants will be gone and an ineffable symbol of majesty and wonder -- and the linchpin in the ecology of an entire continent -- will have been consigned to oblivion.

Sure there are. Cuz National Geographic doesn’t have any environmentalist agenda and they’d NEVER inflate the numbers or exaggerate the outlook ... We’ve been hearing this “endangered elephants” claptrap since Ernest Hemingway bagged his last tusker. Yet there are — by this article’s own admission — half a million of them left.
I ain’t buyin’ it.
Its kinda funny. I live in the most heavily populated part of Michigan along the I-94 corridor and I’ve been watching a trio of bald eagles fishing in the lake every morning.
Tranquilizer the elephants and take the tusks when they are young. They stay alive and will live fruitful lives.
Worst that will happen is the poor elephant will be made fun of by his peers.
This article is so damn stupid and wrong. There are millions of elephants left in Africa. There’d be a lot more if Africa wasn’t full of communist governments. There was excellent game management in Rhodesia, for example, until the Commie Mugabe took over.
So in a country that can’t even begin to feed its citizens, let alone protect them, the government is paying people to run around and GUARD rhinos??? As ridiculous as poaching is, it occurs to me that a lot of dead pachyderms is a small price to pay for a lot of live people!
It sounds to me like your compassion is somewhat misplaced.
I’ve been saying the same thing for years. Same thing with Rhinoceros horns.
And why would the elephant be made fun of by his peers, if their tusks are gone as well?
Very cool!
They’ll be where they’ll be, I guess. And where one encounters the Creatures is part of the magic and wonder of Creation.
Sometimes we, the pinnacle of the Creatures, are a little arrogant in our view of how much control we really have over it all.
Are you sure they weren't giant tsetse flys?
It is not alarmist at all. The indigenous “real” africans are doing their usual thing, ignoring any law that gets in their way.
Thinking that the prohibition on ivory trade makes this “twaddle” is like believing that immigration laws makes the fact of illegal immigrants “twaddle”.
Africa is and always will be a craphole and the ivory trade will persist as long as ivory is purchased on the black market in asian countries as aphrodisiacts. That’s where the demand is these days.
Hillary will be long gone by then.
cool your jets drama queen. You can do the exact same thing I’m doing. Nothing.
It’s funny, isn’t it, how usually the joker telling you to “cool your jets” is the meddlesome judgmental asshole that provoked you in the first place.
I hope they go away. They’re always reminding me about stupid stuff I did long ago.
In twenty years Mammoths and Mastodons will probably
roam the earth thanks to science.
And showed what an ass you really are? Yeah, funny how that works.
“Theyre always reminding me about stupid stuff I did long ago.”
Isn’t that your wife’s job?
We need to make up posters of dead elephants and stupid, grinning Chinese showing off their ivory.
ROFL! Cling to that pitiful delusion, Little One... it’s all you’ve got, and it would be cruel to take it away from you.
