Carla Hale, a teacher in Clintonville, Ohio, was fired just days after an anonymous parent informed the school that her partner's name had appeared in her mother's obituary. Update- April 24, Hale's grievance has been denied.

This tells me that Watterson did the right thing. Parents pay good money to send their kids to Catholic schools with the very reasonable expectation that their kids will receive an authentically Catholic education. Teachers whose goal is to change Church teaching have no business teaching in Catholic schools.
If this woman were living a chaste lifestyle I would object to her termination because she'd be modeling the Catholic position to her students. But public promotion of immorality or teachings contrary to the church isn't something the school should tolerate from those who are supposed to be role models for students and who are entrusted with shaping them into good Catholics for the future. And that's not a homosexual thing. If she were living outside of marriage with a straight partner the school would also be right to fire her.
This teacher has my sympathy for the loss of her mother and my prayers for her future.

If he was reinstated and promoted without expressly repenting and amending his life, then that's a double standard. Do we know that's what happened?

The Roman Catholic Church like most other churches has a lot of ideas about what should and should not be done in cases like this but they also have RULES. When nobody knows someone is living in sin then nothing has to be done. People try to allow people their privacy. The proof of that is that she was a long standing teacher who was well liked. Perhaps some people wondered about her sexuality but they understand privacy. Once you find out about it if you are representing God on the earth you must follow the law, there is no choice, she has to be fired.
In this particular case nobody went after her, she taught at a Roman Catholic school she had to know the rules, she was stupid for publicizing her sin. It is one thing to commit sin and get away with it, it is entirely another to commit sin in front of the priest and not be held accountable.
She was a stupid queer. She thought her queerness was more important than her job and it turned out she was wrong. She apparently thought her queerness would change the word of God, she was wrong. She did something stupid. She got what she should have expected.
I don't understand the feeling of sorrow for her stupidity. She does an in your face sin in front of kids in a church school and thinks it should be ok? A couple of hundred years ago she would have been burned at the stake for doing something this stupid. In Iran she would be stoned. She's getting off easy in my book, when she stands in front of The Lord on judgment day it won't be pretty.
Most if not all Catholic elementary and high schools are funded by tuition and by the diocese. Unlike “Catholic” colleges who made the big mistake of accepting public monies. Parents paying hefty tuition have a right to expect the school to be in line with Catholic teaching. Teachers who lie about their status should not be surprised when the truth comes out and they lose their jobs. It’s sad, she seems like a nice teacher, but if you allow someone “quiet” to stay, you open the door for someone not so quiet.

Similar to the formerly honorable term fiancee, which now commonly means the shackedup-with mother of one's bastard(s), absent any serious intention of marriage.
So debased that if someone introduces a woman as his fiancee, the automatic presumption is that she is his live in bed partner.

I doubt that's what happened. More likely somebody was reading the obituaries (some do - my mom for instance) and spotted a familiar surname.

I think queer is accurate, but there is nothing "Gay" about homosexuality or any other aspect of queer culture.
He wasn't immediately fired. There's the double standard.
There is nothing in the story to indicate that the church "peeped" into her private life. The information was posted in a public newspaper, and brought to the attention of the Diocese by a 3rd party. As a religious employer, if the information revealed a violation of the employment contract on moral grounds, the employer had the right to terminate her employment. If you don't want your employment to be subject to such morals clauses, don't work for a church or other religious employer.
This reminds me of a case a couple of years ago. A single woman who was a teacher at a private Christian school became pregnant out of wedlock. Sexual relations outside of marriage was a violation of the terms of her employment contract, and she was fired. She also tried to sue to get her job back. That was a silly lawsuit as well.
It may be that the obit substantiated what was observed at calling hours or the funeral. Isn't it reasonable to think that a few students, parents, or other teachers showed up to offer condolences?
