Lawsuits waiting to happen......
Wouldn’t surprise me if it was a Union thing, or just the city hierarchy itching to strut their stuff.
I have never seen such media and biggov hysteria as this 2013 Boston event...
Sequestration! 0bama’s 45% cut to bomb detection funding.. He’s just ‘making the GOP pay’ for being so frugal!
Good. The National Guard has no business doing the work of police officers unless they are formally activated by the Governor of a State.
My money's on the Union thing.
During the chaos on the Friday Live Thread, I was following BPD scanner traffic. Chatter on the net began talking about (and I'm quoting from memory) any officer having been on duty more than 18 hours needed to report to the command tent for debrief. Union rules for overtime.
During an all-hands this-is-not-a-drill event, they were more concerned about union compliance.
There was a lot of confusion, they didn't seem to know who was who, if they should illuminate the site or not, all kinds of cross talk and open mikes. I'm surprised they didn't accidentally shoot each other.
union thugs or not.
no place for a military group in a conflict on home soil unless we are in a full blown attack.
let the police then FBI handle it first.....
Multiple people in this thread commenting when they obviously have not read the linked article. This group is part of the state’s DHS plan and was on standby for just such an event in order to evaluate any explosion for other threats, i.e. “dirty bomb”, etc. By not allowing them to do that job, there was potential for mass exposure to other harmful agents beyond the bomb itself. The BPD limited its response to the immediately obvious without considering other threats. This was a classic C3I (Command, Control, Communications, & Intelligence) failure where the right hand did not know what the left hand should be doing.
Several thoughts jump out:
1. Boston PD had enough LEO staff on site with existing personnel
2. Limited area, didn’t wish to add to the confusion at the time.
3. It was a crime scene and once injured were cleared had to be treated as such...NG aren’t trained to protect crime scenes....
I’m sure the offer was appreciated, just not necessary.
Yep— Good move, keep out the very people that have first hand experience with IED’s
Stupid turf war with the cops.
I think that the fears of posters on FR were right that if the feds were to swoop in and take control, we might have seen the bomber killed rather than taken alive, because "dead men tell no tales."
However, I believe that local law enforcement in Boston saw this as a matter of personal pride. Because of that, they were NOT going to let Obama come in and steal their perp away from them. Boston law enforcement was prepared to capture the bomber alive.

They just learned they can pull off martial law without a notable military presence...next time they won’t need the National Guard with their outmoded notions of honor. Next time you boys can stay on base.
So, before the bombings, the National Guard had troops in place for the Boston Marathon? Does anyone else think this sounds just a little suspicious? Or is this SOP for major events?
Now that’s Obama’s “civilian army.” ;-)
Not referring to the military National Guard, BTW, but the civilian police.
New Yorks Army National Guard had five CST personnel working at the Boston Marathon. They were very, very near the blast site; they were in harms way. They were able to respond quickly Representative Michael Grimm said Friday while visiting the unit at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, reports the Staten Island Advance.
Another unit was closer and had already responded.
Insist on cops, then insist on Miranda. Can’t have it both ways.
